When he wakes up, the blood has already cooled on Gustave's face. Light burns the back of his eyelids, the hot sun shining down on him, and that can't he right, can it? If it has, that means— the others— Maelle. -- Gustave wakes up after the massacre on the beach and comes to a horrible, impossible realization: something is preventing him, as well as the rest of the survivors, from staying dead.

You're meant to tell them that you're there for them, and show it at every opportunity. You're meant to hold them close and let them hide from the world, face tucked under your chin or pressed against your shoulder or buried into your chest. You're meant to show that you care. Verso doesn't know how to do any of that. It scares him, that he doesn't know when he forgot how to. "Pick up your weapons," Monoco says, and there is no trace of anything light in his voice. He is seriously, deadly serious. "Now, Verso."
