“What is this? Did you bastards forget that two people are dead? Upupu, or maybe you just didn’t care that much, since all you were blabbering on about was that bo~ring~ mastermind business!”
“Either way, this bear is getting really tired of all of this dramatic apologizing and yelling at someone who clearly isn’t here! I think it’s high time we tallied those votes of yours!”
Just like that, there were ten students standing in the entrance plaza. Some of them rubbed the sleep from their eyes, while others appeared alert and ready for whatever the bear could throw at them.
“So lively and full of energy! Like bear cubs on a fresh spring morning~!”
MonokumAI laughed, emphasizing its excitement with a little twirl.
“Buuuut~! Before all of that super fun motive stuff I have lined up, I have a fascinating secret to share with you all! Upupu, or maybe it’s some bad news, who knows. Are you listening? Lean in closer...closer...upupu...”
“I didn’t want it to come to this, but thanks to a certain incompetent someone, we need to pull out all the stops to crush the little rat from the 81st class who’s still hiding among us! Remember, killing that sneaky bastard means the game ends for all the rest of you! So, let’s all give a rousing thanks to Stella, who couldn’t even handle the paws-itively simple task of finding the mole for me! Even with all that secret messaging and communicating with me, she just couldn’t do the one thing that would end the game for all the rest of you! Upupupu, I’m sure your grandma is just beaming with pride!”
The bear made it’s point with a grand gesture toward Stella, even bringing down a floating bot to shine a spotlight over her head. Then, as MonokumAI spoke up again, it’s voice was a low and cheery whisper, forcing many to listen closely to even hope to hear what it was saying.
“Upupu, now, with all that nastiness off my chest, it’s time to share with you lazy bastards the next exciting motive! Are you listening? Lean closer...closer...you need to listen really closely for this...”
BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP--
Suddenly, blaring alarms began to sound throughout the entire city. They were constant, irritating, and unavoidable, and every single building had apparently been rigged with alarms and speakers to spare. Even worse, mixed in with these alarms and sirens were the occasional bits of sounds that felt all too familiar to the students; the sound of explosions, similar to the sounds from Ikumoto’s death; the sound of screaming, mainly the screams of students in their respective executions; even the sound of gunfire could be heard, of which none of the students here had heard before.
“I hope you bastards all got a really good night of sleep last night! Because it’s the last one you’re gonna get until someone kicks the bucket! For those of you who think you can just plug your ears, all of the lights are going to be stuck on their super-bright setting too! Aaaaaand, if you still think you’re gonna be smart enough to grab a quick nap, maybe you should look down at your wrists!”
As students looked down, they would see thin, metallic bands clamped around their arms. Just how did they not notice them sooner?
“These bad boys can tell if you’re sleeping! So, if you start dozing off, you can expect a shocking wake up call, upupu! Don’t think you can tamper with these either. If you do, it’ll only get more enthusiastic~!”
“Hope you bastards have a taste for coffee! But wait, we don’t even have a barista anymore! Upupupu, I’m off to get my own little shuteye, this bear needs some beauty rest! You’re all dismissed!”
With half of the students gone, no one was foolish enough to assume that they would suddenly be freed from the seemingly endless stream of motives. Like clockwork, students were awoken by the insistent buzzing of their PDAs and the grating voice of MonokumAI.
“Good morning, you bastards! I hope you didn’t think I’d run out of ideas to keep you motivated! With all of these motivational ideas under my belt, I should consider a career in motivational speaking, upupu!”
“So get up, get up! No time for coffee, no time for the snooze button! Stretch, yawn, and get yourselves down to the entrance plaza, pronto!”
For two days, and nearing on the third, students were plagued with the sound of alarms, screams, explosions, and gunfire. Their sleep was disturbed by bright lights and electrifying bracelets, and no one in the city would earn even a moment’s rest during this motive.
The hours of the day no longer felt real, and no one could be sure just how much longer they could keep this up. Even a simple nap or moment of nodding off was met with painful retribution.
However, much differently than in any previous week, students were not suddenly met with the sound of MonokumAI laughing. They were not immediately met with buzzing PDAs or grating announcements.
Instead, every student in the city could feel the rumbling coming from the administrative district. Shortly following the tremor, students were met with...
...nothing.
The alarms in every building suddenly ceased. The lights returned to their normal brightness. The bracelets unclasped and fell off, freeing them from their sleepless sentence. It was clear that something horrible had occurred, and the motive had ended. It could only mean one thing.
Students could still hear the echoes of the alarms going off, almost as if the sound would remain in their ears forever. Only as the initial shock of the sudden quiet wore off could any of them realize that there were still alarms going off in the distance, originating from the administration building.
“No time for rest, you bastards! Call the fire brigade, call the police, call Smokey the Bear! We’ve got quiiiite the mess on our hands! And it’s still a-smoking!”
As students look toward the building, they can see smoke billowing out of the 2nd floor, and the faint remnants of a fire.
“Alright, you bastards! Enough of the idle chit-chat! You’re really not doing your job to keep things entertaining this time around, upupu~! Where’s all the drama and despair that our loyal viewers are promised? I couldn’t bear to lose ratings this far into the season!”
“No matter, I’ll just have to make things even more fun for you soon. Either way, it’s time to bring on the ex~ec~u~tion~!”
But everything must come to an end. Even this trial, filled with sadness, anger and fear, even this has come to a close, and with it the life of one of your classmates.
Monokuma speaks up, his cheerful voice starkly contrasting the situation, as you all waited, all with different feelings, the upcoming punishment.
“Why the long faces? You should be cheering and celebrating another successful trial~! Upupupu, except, maybe those of you who got it so so wrong that you almost killed the wrong person! Hime probably couldn’t hurt a fly even if she wanted to, with her wits~!”
“Enough of the tear-jerking! I can’t bear the wait any longer! After all that drama, it’s time to blow this candle out~!”
