Interchange

Here are a few images made where the Louisville & Nashville (former Monon) and Illinois Central Gulf lines interchanged cars in Bloomington, Indiana.

The first two images, with the northbound L&N freight, were made at the Adams Street road crossing. The lead unit is an ex-SCL Alco C420; one will note that the yard engine from McDoel Yard is shoving on the crummy to get them up “the hill”.

The third photograph was made a little over a month later, looking back at Adams Street. I’ve evidently climbed upon the Monon covered hoppers sitting on the interchange tracks. (The Illinois Central Gulf line is behind the photographer at this point.) That’s a southbound Amtrak Floridian rolling down the hill; it will make its station stop in downtown Bloomington in but a few minutes.

Three images by Richard Koenig; the first two were taken on February 10th 1977 while the third one was shot on March 12th.
