@reconditionedmemories demanded more monster photos so here they are
Johan is characterized as a man looking to become fictional by killing everyone who's known him.
So then how does a fictional man become real? By being loved.
I just love Grimmer so much.
(this post was a lot more concise before I started rambling but I’m just…obliterated.)
Not only is he characterized by his choice to be good, patient, and kind despite having The Scariest Disorders, it’s precisely because of his disorders that he’s objectively one of the most morally/ethically upright characters in the story. Grimmer chooses to believe that people are good. He chooses to do good things. He dedicates his life to what in other characters would be some kind of quest for closure or revenge but he’s genuinely incapable of feeling catharsis. He tells Tenma that even if he’s successful his life won't change at all. He just does it because it’s right. He's a truly selfless person.
This whole scene is gut wrenching not just because it demonstrates that Grimmer thinks he’s incapable of love (because he’s been told it’s a feeling and not something you do) but because it also makes you wonder just how many people have remembered and even loved Grimmer without him realizing it. The little boy he meets in his opening scene probably isn’t going to forget a kind stranger who made him laugh and even the teacher he’s talking to is moved by his dedication to human rights.
Grimmer has probably spent his life doing kind things, being remembered and loved for them and he doesn’t recognize it until he meets Tenma. Who is gentle, who he trusts and looks to for guidance.
God, man…it's just a lot and it seems like from what I’ve seen nearly everyone comes away from Monster loving Grimmer. He spends his final scenes loved. He’s loved in the real world on a meta level by people who connect with him personally and/or realize his inherent goodness.
thinking about how Grimmer refers to himself as incapable of loving anyone because he perceives loving as a feeling he can’t reach (like grief/catharsis) rather than an action (like selflessly dedicating one's life to human rights advocacy).
he’s chooses to love! he chooses to be kind! to help children! to look for lost dogs! he chooses to love constantly! in small and big ways he's so full of purposeful patience and concern and it makes me so deeply sad that he can't see it!!
thinking about exploration and consent being a huge factor of Tenma and Grimmer navigating their relationship, and all the inevitable fumbling in the early days.
Grimmer’s last relationship was one he felt he ought to have because it was inconspicuous and convenient. does he know what he likes? I don’t think so. that wouldn’t strike him as crucial information or seem like anything he'd have room to figure out.
I also feel like given his generally dehumanizing self perception he'd feel guilty for getting involved with anyone, for taking their time and attention while he sees himself as a incomplete/fake person who can’t properly reciprocate. Tenma is full of so much love, and he’s so loved by other people. it seems like the world must be full of people who would be better for Tenma.
Tenma of course isn’t really in the same boat as Grimmer, but he is definitely classified as an outsider and someone who's rarely connected romantically with women. it doesn’t seem like he’s ever sought out romantic relationships, they’ve always been arranged for him by someone else or initiated by the other person.
(also while I have your attention his history with Rudy 'my wife left me' Gillen feels so much like a nervous baby gay awakening)
anyway ANYWAY it’s 6am and I’m just thinking about the boys communicating that they care for each other
Tenma and Rudi's relationship is so funny I love them sm
