I was going through some of my old art files and I found a WIP of Werebat Chris that I remember doing as part of a Halloween-themed thing a friend and I started last year. I never got round to finishing it, but it did motivate me to do a bunch of Werebat Chris doodles! :D

Uh oh, looks like someone pissed him off! 

I really enjoy the trope of characters having a protective trait that guards them from danger and the like, so what better way to explore that than experimenting on one of my favourite characters! 👀 

I wanted to play with the idea that Werewolf Chris grows spines when experiencing very intense emotions or is under extreme stress, which is actually very uncommon to see in a werewolf. It’s basically a physical response the body has to warn others to keep away/protect itself from harm by pretty much making him untouchable. The spines are very sturdy and are able to dislodge from his body. They have serrations that act like hooks, and once it gets stuck in something (like flesh), it’s super difficult to remove without tearing out chunks in the process. So avoid trying to hug the guy when he’s all spiky, unless you wanna get skewered!

You can also see him preening his spines from time to time. Gotta keep them neat and tidy! :D

I’ve gotten so into this Cryptid AU that I’ve been doing some worldbuilding, starting with Chris of course (with guest appearances from some of the RE crew, plus a Werewolf Claire) :3

These were kinda messily compiled together so I separated and reorganised them to look better haha

Some notes on Cryptid AU Chris:

Is a member of S.T.A.R.S (which is a forest ranger/search and rescue service in this AU) and a lumberjack. His werewolf strength comes in very handy for this as you can imagine.

Tends to patrol the forest after dark for anyone wandering around to ensure they don’t get attacked by anything (it’s been getting very dangerous at night…)

Resides in a log cabin he built by hand on the edge of the forest.

Usually seen as a human, but occasionally half shifts. Will only fully shift into his other form in certain situations (typically when fighting off threats/protecting someone from harm).

Has a cat named Marshmallow (thank you Claire for the name lol). He found Mallow as a near-frozen kitten during a particularly harsh winter night and nursed them back to health. Super affectionate towards Chris and loves to curl up in his lap or arms.

Enjoys woodcarving as a hobby and often makes figures for others. Made a carving of Mallow as a kitten and displayed it above the fireplace.

You accidentally stumble across what you think is the largest wolf you have ever seen. That thought quickly dies when you witness the beast stand up, his large form towering over everything in sight. At first you felt fear, then confusion, as gentle golden eyes watch you curiously. He makes no attempt to attack, and eventually you manage to relax, albeit still a little on edge. You wonder to yourself, ‘…do I dare approach?’

I really wasn’t expecting my Werewolf Chris to get so much love, but I’m honestly glad to see others expressing their adoration for this absolute sweetheart 🥺❤️ And a little bonus showing our boy getting flustered by all the praise he’s been receiving :3c
