Something else was pulling at you to use it. It felt stronger, but harsher, angry almost. So instead of going down that road you simply bandaged the last few grazes and left the bathroom changing into a different shirt and an oversized hoodie.
You made your way back down the halls to the common room just to find two new people standing outside and a ways away from the group of Avengers inside the now closed common room. Frowning at the bickering group inside the glass room you moved to the two new people.
Both tall, both handsome, but many differences. One wore reds and silvers a hammer on the table next to him, while the other wore deep greens, gold, and blacks, but this one was chained. A set of handcuffs by the likes that you’d never seen before and a matching set of metal covering his mouth.
The one in red was a blonde with blue eyes focused on the Avengers his arms crossed as he watched, a frown forming on his face. The other had ebony black hair and piercing green blue eyes that weren’t staring at the Avengers, but rather at you. This time you knew it was a gut instinct yelling at you, this time you listened. Coming short and stopping you stared at him.
This had trouble written all over it.
It was Tony, Clint and Steve running the argument. Their voices the loudest and most demanding. Tony was having none of this, Clint was on the fence which confused many of the others. Steve was cautious, but still somewhat supporting what Thor had come to him about a few weeks ago.
The idea being that Loki stay at the compound with someone assigned to him, someone who he would listen to or at least not kill and this person would help get him situated. That is in getting him to see a “better side of things.”
While everyone bickered and voices were raised and lowered it was Bucky who’d gotten sick and tired of the argument, already even more confused about why everyone was so damned angry? It was Bucky who turned ever so slightly to see Y/N and the one in green. Loki.
He didn’t look away as he got Natasha’s attention. She looked and he could tell that seeing those two together was a bad thing as Natasha’s face drained of all color upon seeing the two.
It was in those minutes that Clint had looked to her for back up and that’s when everyone slowly caught onto what was happening outside the glass.
Standing there you felt useless as you just looked at him. Somehow even chained up he seemed dangerous. It was his eyes, it had to be. It was like he was looking into you not at you. Looking into all your deepest and darkest of secrets.
Shoving your hands into your pockets you took a step closer never looking away. He tilted his head in curiosity, and you couldn’t help, but take another step, this one much smaller though. A few feet apart now you hadn’t noticed all the eyes on you two.
Looking over him once more doing anything to not look into his eyes you noticed a wound.
“You’re injured.” You whispered. Your voice startled you, usually you weren’t that quiet, and so you repeated your statement and gestured to the wound on his forehead.
His eyes looked up to where you’d pointed, head moving slightly as he did so. He seemed to almost shrug as if there was nothing that could be done and he was fine with it.
“May I?” You started to reach out gingerly and he leaned back apprehensive. Pulling back you realized he didn’t know what you could do, and to be honest at this point with what happened earlier you didn’t know if you even had any more power left in you.
Shaking your head lightly you reached your hand out a bit more and moved to push the sleeve of your hoodie up.
“Look I’m not armed I just want ta’ heal the wound honey.” You spoke, a bit more in control of your voice now, your regular demeanor coming back. While he did stand straight once more, his brow stayed furrowed.
Before anyone really understood what was happening the group watched as Y/N stepped forward, much too close for anyone’s liking and healed a small wound on him. Y/N’s eyes had turned golden and although they flickered they still glowed, the light of her powers came up around her arm and reached out crossing the distance she’d kept from him.
It danced and twirled until it reached him. His eyes lit up in realization as she healed his minimal head wound and as soon as she was done that’s when Tony came storming out hell-bent on separating the two for good.
You’d only just finished when a loud crash and the sound of glass shattering pulled you away from the man and your eyes fell upon the whole group of Avengers coming into the open space after Tony.
He’d tossed open the door with such a force that it shattered. He was glaring at the man you’d just healed, but you had no idea why. Coming to your side he immediately grabbed your arm and pulled you behind him as he faced the man.
“You will never touch her, go near her, or even so much as look at her again!” He was shouting, but it wasn’t making sense. That same feeling from before was tugging at you aching for you to use it. It was linked to you, but you were so confused, more people started shouting and you couldn’t make anything out now.
Tony’s grip became too strong and was hurting you. Ripping your arm from his grasp he turned to face you as you shouted, your hands covering your ears.
“Everyone just SHUT UP!!!” A blast of dark black magic sent everyone to the floor like a shock wave. The energy the... thing... that had been puling at you finally came out. It felt good. No.
It felt amazing.
Like you’d been chained and that just broke down the walls of the damned dungeon. Everyone was staring at you with fear in their eyes. A part of you cared, but right now you didn’t, you just wanted answers.
You cooled down a bit before speaking, giving everyone time to stand.
“Now. I’m not saying it again. Everyone is going to sit the fuck down and explain to me what the hell just happened. None of that bullshit dodging around the question crap either.” You spoke sternly looking over everyone’s faces as they slowly stood.
The room followed your orders and grabbed seats around the room as you calmed down. Taking a breather and closing your eyes for a moment you could feel the new energy flowing through you, holding onto you like a death grip.
“Now tell me who these newbies are? Why am I supposedly not allowed to go near them, and what were you all arguing about?” your voice was calm, but still dark and almost sinister, again you didn’t care although many of your teammates were giving you concerned and worried looks. You had the floor and you’d made it clear that you wanted straight answers.
“Y/N, meet Thor and Loki.” Natasha was standing as she gestured to both of the new men, Thor in red and Loki in green.
“They’re brothers, and Loki here almost leveled New York last year.” She continued and you nodded along before something clicked in your head, remembering the news article.
“Yeah, I remember that, okay so what were you all arguing about?” It was silent, for a moment or two before you looked to Bucky who sighed.
“Don’t look at me doll, I barely understood what they were arguing about. Something involving not trusting someone, and not liking some idea.” He shrugged and you accepted his answer as you took a seat of your own, leaning against a couch arm.
“Thor had contacted me a few weeks ago about having his brother, Loki, stay here.” Steve started as he linked his fingers together while he leaned forward in his chair.
Both the brothers were standing still and you’d noticed that upon Steve’s information Loki had whipped around to face Thor who just nodded supporting Steve’s statement. If looks could kill, Thor would have been tortured to death in the most painful of ways by Loki’s glare.
“I and some others thought it would be a good idea, but Stark doesn’t think so.” As soon as he’d mentioned Tony, he was up. Tony was pacing around his seat not willing to go near you or Loki as he spoke.
“Of course I don’t agree with it. Think about it, let’s bring the one person who tried to destroy New York, into it. Not just that, but into the compound.” He was ranting again and you’d had enough.
“Tony.” He shut his mouth and looked to you standing as still as possible, “Sit.” He took up his seat with a huff and you relaxed. Running your hands through your hair and down your face as you let your head hang while you thought.
“Alright well, they’re both here anyways, so why not let them stay for a few weeks, see how it goes and decide then. Who knows maybe he’ll end up helping. For now we need someone to watch over him, someone to be-”
“An executioner?” Tony offered, but you weren’t having it.
“No. More like someone who he doesn’t competently despise.” You spoke looking up now across the faces of your team mates.
“Exactly what I said, thank you. We need someone he doesn’t hate, but someone who could handle him in a fight if it ever came to that, or at least someone he isn’t going to hurt.” Steve spoke up, straightening a little in his chair proud that you’d practically agreed with him.
“I’d say it should be Clint or me. He doesn’t really know us.” Sam finally spoke up his voice welcomed in the all too quiet room. You gave up the power in the room, the dark power in your stomach was subsiding, but held it’s grip. You opted to just listen to everyone before looking to Loki.
He was a mixture of infuriated and bored. Then it hit you, possibly the simplest, but most dangerous idea ever.
“I have a suggestion.” Your voice was soft, but nobody was taking chances with you and they went silent once more.
“Well you seem to know who he hates and why, so we can adjust based on that, but why not let him pick. I mean he knows who he hates most right? He should have some choice in who he’s going to be stuck with.” You shrugged pulling your hands into your sleeves and crossing your arms.
Snuggling into your hoodie you waited for everyone’s’ thoughts, most of which thought it was a fine idea. Looking to Loki he gave you a small nod in thanks, you returned it while nobody else was watching.
“Alright so Loki just walk up to the person you choose I guess, again preferable someone you don’t hate, and preferable someone you are least likely to hurt.” He gave you a look at your last words and you sighed clarifying.
“Okay fine, just someone you don’t totally hate, and someone you wouldn’t mind following you around or randomly checking up on you.” He took a few moments obviously thinking and toying with the idea of it all.
You turned and got up from your spot moving to the coffee pot behind you. Apparently your blast had knocked that over as well. While righting the counter you made yourself a coffee.
“Looks like he’s chosen.” Sam spoke up, although by his voice it sounded as if he were smiling. What would he be smiling about? Grabbing your coffee with your hoodie sleeve covering your hands you brought the mug to your face you turned around to question the group.
“Who did he-Shit! That’s not funny!” He had been standing behind you and the whole group was giggling and laughing now as he’d scared you.
“God-damn sneaky ass snake…” You whispered under your breath as you sipped your cup and moved around him.
“Don’t know why you’d want me to be your superior, but whatever your choice.” As you walked back into the main living space you fixed a fallen table and put your drink down before you started to help the others who’d begun fixing the room. Upon noticing that Loki was just silently following you around as you moved things you sighed and looked to Thor.
“Okay Thor we have got to get rid of these damned chains on him, at least remove the thing over his mouth?” A few of the faces in the room turned to look at you and give you wide eyed looks before going back to cleaning what little was left, or leaving the room.
“Okay what’d I say this time?” You asked lightly throwing your arms up into the air. Thor chuckled as he helped and once everything was fixed the three of you sat down.
“You’re sure you want me to remove his bindings?” You frowned confused as to why that would be a question.
“Yes I’m sure, he kinda needs his hands, and I’d appreciate it if he could speak so he could warn me when he enters the damn room. Sneaky snake.” You mumbled the last part under your breath, but both of them still caught it, making Thor give a light breathy laugh.
“Well if you are sure that you want his bindings off. I shall remove them.” He gave you one last time to say no and you again insisted that you wanted them off of him.
You watched as the bindings slowly came undone, you could hear the mechanisms working from across the coffee table. Picking up your drink once more you watched in fascination as the bindings undid and slipped into Thor’s hands.
“Now that was cool. Can I see them?” Putting your coffee down you reached forward and Thor carefully handed them to you as he undid the piece around Loki’s mouth.
Studying them you could see it still moving on its own. The gears moving and practically twisting in your hands. It made a sound and you dropped it onto the coffee table before snatching up your drink staring at the cuffs as they slowly transformed into a small pointed blade.
“Woah.” You were still looking at it as Sam came up next to you.
“Yeah I’d say Woah just about sums that up.” He spoke mocking you, but marveling at the cuffs he too had seen it transform into the blade. Looking up you saw Thor and Loki looking over you two as if you were children.
“Don’t give me that look, it’s cool alright we don’t have stuff like this here. On this planet that right there is a one of a kind.” You angrily pointed to the blade as you spoke. Your drink was almost finished so you quickly chugged it before casually swinging over the back of the couch to land perfectly and put away your mug.
“Aright, come on Sneaky Snake, I have to show you your room. Luckily there just so happens to be a second bedroom on my floor of the building.” You strode back towards them and past as you gestured for Loki to follow. He laughed a little at the nickname.
“Sneaky snake, of all the nicknames I’ve heard, that is the worst.” You feigned hurt, a hand to your chest as you walked to the elevator.
“How dare you, I thought it was quite clever thank you very much.” You smiled triumphant that you’d made him laugh again. The elevator opened upon your arrival and you stepped in first. The doors shut and FRIDAY’s voice filled the small room.
“Your floor Mrs. Y/L/N?” You smiled and nodded. “Yes please Friday. Oh and Loki here will be staying on my floor as well.” A few chimes sounded and the elevator started moving.
“Noted. Is there anything else I can help you with Mrs. Y/L/N?” FRIDAY questioned as the box moved higher. “No thank you that’ll be all.” A few more chimes and there were no more questions. You looked to Loki who was giving you a confused look as the door opened.
“Ah yes, Tony basically runs the compound with the help of FRIDAY his AI, artificial intelligence. Everyone here has gotten so use to it that we just talk to her as if she were a real person rather than electronics.” He nodded in understanding as he followed you out onto your floor of the compound.
The compound wasn’t very big, but you had the second highest floor, Clint having a section of the top floor.
Upon exiting you immediately walked out into the kitchen and dining room. It was small as it was just meant for you, but it was sleek. Beyond that a wall hid the rest of the open space. Walking in further you directed him to look down the hall to find the bathroom, down the other hall directly across from that one the two bedrooms.
“Oh and I have one more thing.” You backed yourself against the thick black sheet you had hanging in front of the opening leading into the extra space behind the wall.
“Do you like to read?” You questioned him and saw his brow furrow out of curiosity.
“Of course.” He stated as if it were obvious. He clasped his hands behind his back and leaned forward ever so slightly, intrigued. You pushed open the dark sheets and went in beckoning him to come into the room.
The large colored glass window was the only light in the room, otherwise it was floor to ceiling books. Some of the books were even stacked on top of each other on the floor. A few different types of chairs could be found in the room. Majority with the backs facing the window.
“This is my alcove and I suppose it’s also yours now. Feel free to take any of the books you want out of here if you don’t want to read them in the room. I have the sheet up so nobody comes in here and so I can use a bit of my powers on the sheets to stop anyone from coming in. Oh, almost forgot to mention the windows. The glass is one way. We can see out, but nobody can see in, plus due to the coloring it’s better for the books and for your eyes to read.” You let out a light huff as you tried to calm your nerves.
You watched his face carefully reading over every part of it. His ebony black hair moving ever so slightly as he turned to take in the amount of books you had. His deep turquoise colored eyes scanning over the condition of the books, the layout and even the titles.
“You don’t have to tell me what you think right now as I kinda have to show you around the rest of the compound. So come on Sneaky Snake.” You boldly linked your arm in his pulling him out of his trance and dragging him back out of the room.
You’d finished showing him the compound and now was the questioning period it seemed. He’d started asking you what you did to end up with the Avengers how you found them, what you do for them. You shook your head silently looking to the ground as you walked side by side.
“I don’t do anything for them, I do stuff with them though. I have an ability I’ve had since was a little girl. I can heal people, but I kept it secret hidden away luckily for me I got smart and went to the Avengers for help. Instead of turning me away they let me join, but didn’t make a big fuss about it. So very few people actually know that I’m an Avenger.” You smiled thinking about the day you’d come to the tower.
“Do tell.” He swiftly turned and grabbed your arm so your back was to the wall and he towered over you, “Everyone else seemed quite shocked at what you did not hours ago, I assume it is unusual for you to be using black magic.”
His knowledge and confidence on the subject making him quite interested in what had occurred. The thing tugging at you from within begging for you to use it and when you did it sent your whole team down on their asses.
You nervously fiddled with your hands picking at your fingers as you thought about it. Completely unsure of what really happened, but terrified at the thought of dark magic. Something that even in human tales, and myths was said to be extremely dangerous and could rip a person’s soul apart.
“You want my full and utter honesty?” looking up at him he nodded slightly and shifted to come a little closer, “I have no clue what the hell happened. I was scared and felt like I was being pushed down, trapped almost and there was just this… feeling of something wanting to be used, and I lost control I just let it out.” You looked up searching his eyes, his face for anything at all.
A sign of fear, hate, or disgust, anything really. You kept thinking in your head about what had happened and just as always you pulled things way out of proportion and analyzed everything as you continued to think.
“Ugh the strangest part was that usually I hate people looking at me or looking to me for orders as if I were the leader, but when that happened and everyone looked so frightened of me I just… I just didn’t give two shits.” You shrugged and a smile was pealing onto your face and you couldn’t stop it.
“I just didn’t give a damn, I had everyone’s attention and I had the damn room. Overall I felt powerful, free almost.” Your momentary excitement was drifting away and you calmed once more and waited for anything from Loki, then realization hit you.
“Oh shit I’m sorry I just dumped all of this on you and we’ve only just met really.” You covered your mouth in shock and back into the wall behind you. He gave you a smile? He smiled?
“Its fine pet, Midgardians have a weakness to me. They tend to just tell me their secrets if I catch them off guard. It requires very little effort on my part, although I find some are harder to interpret.” Finally he stood tall and looked at you thoughtfully before he clasped his hands behind his back and started to move down the hall once more.
You followed getting back into the pace you’d had before. Silence ensued as the pair of you continued side by side. After a few moments he spoke once more.
“Well I can’t know for sure, but from what I saw back there, from what you’ve told me. I’d almost say that it was pure dark magic. It consumes the wielder twisting them, and the amount that you released suggests that you have one hell of a reservoir of this dark magic.”
He stopped suddenly and looked down at you with an extreme amount of concern on his face. His cold hands grabbing hold of your shoulders forcing you to look at him.
“Simply put you’re dangerous. With this much possible dark magic holding onto you, well if you’re not able to control it. It may very well consume you and those around you.” He went still looking into your eyes for anything and by the Gods were you scared now.
“Well you seem to know a lot about it, can’t you teach me help me to learn to control it or at least wield it properly? I’ve been healing the team for quite a while now and I’d hate to see them hurt.” He frowned at this.
“Yes about that you said that you’ve never used this power before, but yet you heal? You used light magic on me just moments before your magic went dark. Was there something that happened to have caused you to use large amount of your magic?” He questioned and continued moving through the compound.
His sudden shift in demeanor shaking you.
You made your way back to the common room where only a few of the others were located; Thor, Steve, and Bucky were chatting when you’d come in still engrossed in what Loki was asking and telling you.
“Well we had a mission not a couple of hours ago where I had to use a fair amount of magic. Why? What does that have to do with it?” By this point the two of you had stopped at the kitchen. Loki crossed his arms and leaned against a wall to think about his answer while you busied your nervous hands making a cup of hot chocolate.
Also by this time the three others in the room had quieted down to listen in on the conversation.
“Well it could mean that your one of the few witches that has a balance. Meaning that you have both light and dark magic within you, but you have to keep it even. Use each the same amount. You’ve been healing, using your light magic too much, now you will have to use your dark magic for some time.”
Your hands were shaking as you looked down to them. You summoned up some energy to pull out some light magic, twirling it around you fingers when a dull pain course through you from your chest. Loki and the others looked on and watched as what looked like a black vein trail up your neck to your right eye. A similar black vein moved down your arms to your hands.
All you did was watch as the light magic changed and shifted it was hard at first. It was as if the magic was alive struggling under the darkness. Finally you noticed the black veins on your arms and watched as they got closer. Once they reached your fingertips the dull pain was gone, but so was you light magic. Now thick tendrils of black magic wove out over your fingers like that of your light magic.
You looked at your hands in shock unable to properly process the new information. You looked to Loki who seemed deeply interested and that’s when you saw Steve, Thor and Bucky. You quickly dismissed the magic and hid your hands behind your back. Frantically looking between all of them you got scared and started to run. You ran past them and when you heard Bucky running after you calling to you, you pushed open the door to the stair way.
“Y/N come back, I’m not going to hurt you come on, you can trust me!” He grabbed the railing and looked up at you, only a flight of stairs up, but for him it would be two jumps at most. You knew this.
“I know you won’t hurt me, but I could hurt you. After all the good I’ve done all the healing now all I have is dark magic. I don’t even think I’ll be able to heal for some time.” Tears started to prick at your eyes and blur your vision. You held it in for as long as you could until you just couldn’t.
Your knees were going to let you fall to the ground and Bucky saw. He moved making quick work of the stairs and caught you. He picked you up and carried you bridal style up to your small apartment. He’d told FRIDAY to let Thor, Loki, and Steve know that he was taking you back to your room. Opening up your apartment you were still clinging to Bucky’s shirt as he moved through the space.
He went to go put you down in your room, but you told him to put you in your reading space. He did and marveled for a moment or two at how many books you had. Placing you carefully onto one of the chairs he made to leave.
“Bucky… thank you for carrying me. Thank you for everything.” With that your voice broke once more as you reached out to grab his sleeve. He knelt down in front of you then pulled you down into a hug. He whispered reassurances to you softly before finally you asked him to stay.
He did.
You picked up the large book he’d given you one day and he gladly read it to you. It was only an hour after he’d started reading that he looked down at your curled up sleeping form to realize that you’d found comfort and safety in him.
He smiled and played with your hair some until he also fell asleep with you holding onto him tightly. Your fists balled up in his t-shirt.
You were happy to just sleep the fear away, and that is exactly what you’d done.
Back in the common room Loki was explaining to Thor, and Steve what had just happened, and why you had freaked out.
“Look I don’t expect either of you to fully understand, but in short she has an equal amount of light and dark magic, like I’d said before.” He took a breathe and looked them over. Like two rabbits standing in front of a racing horse, glossy eyed and silent.
“Maybe you need a visual.” With a wave, green magic slipped over the surface of the coffee table between them and a simple scale appeared.
“Look imagine this side is light and the other dark.” With another wave either side of the scale had floating balls of either light or dark energy, resting on the flat plates supported by the chains connecting either plate to the scale.
“Y/N has been using large amounts of light magic for what has been a few years now.” The scale begins to tip as the light side starts to slowly dissipate. “This has caused unbalance obviously. So she needs to use up the same amount of dark magic to be even again. Then she’ll have to continue to use both sides equally or this may occur again.”
As Loki looked to the two they seemed to understand it a bit better. “Now do you understand?”
“Understand what?” Tony asked as he stepped into the room curious as always. Loki sighed and put his hand on his face unwilling to try and explain it all again. Soon both Steve and Tony got the rest of the team into the room – except for you and Bucky of course – and Loki proceeded to re-explain everything.
“Okay that makes sense, but why freak out about it?” Someone questioned as Loki sighed once more for he felt that he was apparently the only one besides Bucky that understood.
“How would you feel if all you’ve ever know was good? Good, beautiful, light magic, something that is praised in almost every culture, this is all you know then to just have it all stripped away from you. The light exterior you’d been holding onto is gone and you’re left with nothing more than dark magic, a feared and hated magic something that many assume to be everything bad in the world? Tell me how you would feel then, and on top of that, you’d have to watch it happen to yourself?”
At this point everyone was casting their eyes to the ground or away from Loki’s eyes. He was the only other one who understood what was happening and they had no clue. Someone they hated had more knowledge on one of their most trusted team mates then they did.
Loki heaved a sigh and moved past everyone to the elevators.
“Where do you think you’re going reindeer games?” Tony was trying to agitate him stop him from where he was going.
“I’m going to go check on her and Bucky rather than stand here all night with you lot.” Loki didn’t slow down, he just kept going. Not bothering to listen to his brother’s warnings. He made his way up to the apartment only to find you not in your room.
He moved to the blackened sheets hiding the book room and opened them slowly. Only to find you curled under Bucky’s arm your hands gripping his shirt, an open book on his lap and his face in your hair. Loki felt something pull at him on the inside and it hurt. He didn’t like the idea of this hurting him, but he quickly swept the emotions away and grabbed a blanket to cover the two of you with. He moved the book onto a nearby night stand before leaving.
He went to bed, but not before promptly locking the apartment so as to make sure the three of you weren’t bothered. A lot had happened in one day, but Loki knew it was going to be interesting, that was for sure.
