Transcript of Interview with Karen Gillan on MonsterFM87.7's Gavternoon.

Karen, how's it going? Karen Gillan: Yo. Gavin: Okay, so you're back in Inverness? Karen: I am. Back in the Shneck. Gavin: Are you back often? Karen: I come back as often as I can. Um, maybe like two-three times a year. Always at Christmastime. Gavin: What do you miss about Inverness when you're away? Karen: I miss the fact that all my friends and family are here. They're kind of, like, in close proximity cause Inverness is quite small; so everything is easy to get to, that's quite nice. Gavin: Definitely. Karen: And it's just beautiful. And I only really started to appreciate the beauty once I moved away, then came back and went "Whoa!" Yeah, an ice rink. Gavin: Oh, an ice rink? Karen: Yeah. Gavin: Like ice skating? Karen: Not really, but I just missed it. Gavin: Fair enough. Okay, so, going back to the beginning: was there a performance or a film that sort of sparked your interest in acting?
Karen: One of my all time favorite films is "Little Shop of Horrors," I just love that film so much because, I mean, I'm not, I mean I do like a musical, but I'm not a massive musical fan. But this one I just love, because I think the music's amazing, but also it's dark, there's something quite creepy about it and that's what I like in a film and that is reflected in my other film tastes as well. I went through this real horror film stage when I was a teenager - I was obsessed with "Scream" and things like that. And then my all time favorite film is "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?" and again that has that kind of dark side to it. Gavin: So you like the dark roles? Karen: I would love to do the dark roles, yeah. Gavin: And once you got into it, just going, was it a school play that you first got your first role in? Karen: I think it probably was, yes. I remember I used to suffer from stage fright quite badly, so I actually used to audition for school plays and things like that and I would never get in cause I was so nervous, I couldn't, nothing would come out of my mouth. But then once I kinda got over the stage fright, I was in, I went to Charleston Academy... Gavin: Just across the road, yeah? Karen: Just across the road, yeah. And, yeah, I was in a production of "The Sound of Music" at Charleston, so that was good. And also, I was doing classes in Eden Court theatre as well. Gavin: Who did you play in "Sound of Music"? Karen: I played Liesl. Gavin: Liesl? Karen: *Sort of sings*"I am sixteen going..." Oh, god. Gavin: And you mentioned Eden Court? How did you make that leap over to there? Karen: The leap to Eden Court? Well they just have an amazing selection of classes for all sorts of ages and I just kind of did lots of classes there. I think the first class I ever did there was with a man called "John Bett" and then I did loads of other ones with Amanda Luscombe, as well. And actually now, I'm the arts education ambassador for Eden Court. So it's kind of funny that that's kind of where I started and now I'm doing that. Gavin: So full circle? Karen: Yeah, I guess so. Gavin: How much training did you do there? Karen: A lot. I spent a lot of time there, actually, growing up, doing loads of different classes. It's amazing, I did dance classes and loads of acting classes, and I did my higher drama there as well. So I'm so glad that I was able to go to Eden Court cause it played such a part in my training. Gavin: And then from there it was drama school? Karen: From there it was Edinburgh, college, Telford College for a year, studying acting and then drama school in London for a couple of months, before I dropped out, I'm a massive drop out. Gavin: Well it seems to have worked out alright for you so... Karen: Oh well I wouldn't recommend it though. I did work in a pub for a while after I dropped out. Gavin: And then TV sort of came off of the back of that, I suppose. Karen: I guess so, yeah. Yeah, I just started auditioning for things in London and then got one episodes of things here and there, I did a sketch show, and then just auditioned for Doctor Who. Gavin: Okay. Did you ever think about radio? Karen: About radio? I haven't actually thought about radio. I'd quite like to do maybe a radio play or something like that. That'd be fun. Gavin: Are you quite into your music? Karen: I love my music. Gavin: Who's your favorite bands? Karen: Favorite band of all time? The Who. Gavin: Of all time, The Who? Karen: Yeah, yeah, it's gotta be the Who. Probably favorite song: "Who Are You?" And I really like this band called Everything Everything. Gavin: Oh yeah. Karen: They're one of my favorite bands at the moment. And also a band called Mother Mother. I seem to like bands that have...that repeat the same name. But yeah, they're kind of my favorite bands at the moment. But it's constantly changing. I also like a bit of classical music. I love Chopin, just cause, again, going back to the dark theme, it slightly scares me, and that's what I like about it. Gavin: Does it? Did you ever use music to prepare for scenes? Karen: All the time, yeah. That's actually one of the biggest things I do to prepare for a scene, if it's particulary emotional. Yeah, I will isolate myself from people and just blast music in my iPod. Gavin: Can you give any examples of music you've used? Karen: Yeah, I mean I've used all sorts of music. I think I used the Schindler's List theme at one point, it made me cry. Yeah, I mean it really varies - Mother Mother I've used to make myself cry, yeah, and a bit of Chopin as well. Yeah, it's generally the more emotional, sort of crying scenes that I need that. Gavin: Mhmm. So if I was to open the MonsterFM archive to you to play one song, who would you pick? Karen: Oh my god, don't know, I have not prepared any sort of answer to this. I would pick Everything Everything, "Photoshop Handsome." Gavin: Everything Everything, "Photoshop Handsome," handsome even, up next on MonsterFM. Karen: Yay! Gavin: Okay, so you're back, good afternoon here. And I'm joined by Karen Gillan. We've just heard Everything Everything, picked by yourself. Karen: Yes, did you like it? Gavin: It was good, yeah. Okay, so when you're back in Inverness, can you remember the first time you were recognized on the street? Karen: Oh, no, I cannot. I remember the first bit of fan mail I ever received, though. I'll never forget that. It was the weirdest thing. Gavin: Really? Karen: This sweet girl, yeah, she sent loads of pictures of herself and it was the most lovely little letter. And me and my mum were quite excited, I was like "Mum, look at this!" Gavin: Interesting. Can you walk down the Inverness High Street unrecognized anymore? Karen: I can walk down, I can walk down the High Street unrecognized, yeah. But, as the evening comes in, that's when it starts to happens more. Gavin: When you pop into the pubs? Karen: Yeah. Gavin: Does it get quite bothersome? Or is it all good? Karen: It's not a bother. It's not a bother to me. But it's just a different sensation to normally the way I'd go to the pubs in Inverness, it's different now. Gavin: I suppose quiet nights are not possible? Karen: Not really, no. Gavin: And well when I was doing some research for the interview here, using Wikipedia, the first... Karen: Oh yes, Wikipedia's great, isn't it? Gavin: It is. Is everything true on your Wikipedia page here? Karen: I don't know. What's it say? Gavin: It's just like a bio for you. Karen: I mean, yeah, the last time I saw it was quite a while ago, so I'm guessing it's still right, unless someone's made up horrible lies about me. Gavin: Well I could see, you know... Karen: Okay, that's good to know.. Gavin: And maybe later on you can edit it yourself out... Karen: Yeah, maybe I'll put a little lie in there and then you can try and spot it. Gavin: Yeah. Karen: Okay. Deal. Gavin: Done. Okay, so, of course, on Wikipedia, I read you're doing a play now and it's called... Karen: Yeah, yeah, I'm gonna do a play called "Inadmissible Evidence," by John Osborne and it's gonna be on at the Donmar Warehouse Theatre, in London, which is the most amazing little theatre, really sort of intimate, so that will be quite an experience. And yeah, my first stage show, professional stage show. So I'm kind of nervous... Gavin: Is it kind of a return to your Eden Court roots? Karen: I guess it is, yeah. Except for I was all young and fearless back in those days. Gavin: Have you got a preference between theatre and TV work? Karen: I'd like to do both, to be honest, because I feel that they're really different: screen acting and theatre acting, I find them completely different, actually. So it's, you know, you can't really, sort of, compare them actually, they're two different things in themselves, so I want to do both. Right now, I'm really leaning towards doing more theatre just because I've been doing screen for kind of two years now, a lot, so yeah. Gavin: So a good mix, basically? Karen: Yeah, exactly, variety. Gavin: And if you had, do you have a dream role, if you could play anyone? Karen: D'you know, what's her name, Elizabeth Báthory... Gavin: I don't know her. Karen: She was, I can't remember what era it was, but she's kind of what we base vampires on, and she was this really scary lady who used to kind of like drink the blood of young women. Gavin: Sort of a dracula-vampira type? Karen: Yeah, yeah, exactly, but I would love to play something like that. Wouldn't that be cool? Gavin: It would be, like going back to the dark roles, I suppose. Karen: Exactly, yeah, I'll get there one day. Gavin: Need some dark music to prepare for that? Karen: Yeah, exactly, yeah. Or maybe Lady MacBeth, that'd be really cool, cause she's from Shnecky. Gavin: Yeah, another local... Karen: Yeah, exactly, a local lass. Gavin: Fantastic!
