He comes too slowly, like he hadn’t just watched someone die in his dreams, because apparently humans really can get used to anything, and then a voice says, “Steve,” and he’s suddenly wide a-fucking-wake.

He says heard, because the English language can only bend so far, but he’s certain that the word didn’t arrive via his ears. It was inside his head, and yet it didn’t feel like his own thoughts.

It felt like someone talking to him from inside his own skull.

Steve holds out his hand, curious, and Dustin drops Eddie’s necklace into it, a guitar pick with a hole punched through it on a chord. “Are you sure?” Steve asks. “I’m sure,” Dustin says, sounding steadier than Steve’s heard him in weeks. “Eddie never took it off.” Steve nods and fastens it around his own neck, and tries not to think about the fact that it’s the sort of thing Eddie might have given to a girlfriend. Or a boyfriend.
