MOMO ON THE RIVER ROADS, 1972 - Louisiana, Missouri. Intersection where the tracks meet with the Pike 118 Road and the River Road in Louisiana, Missouri. In July of 1972, folks living in and around the Mississippi River town of Louisiana were reporting a series encounters with a large, hairy, smelly, Bigfoot-like hominid that came to be known as “MoMo, the Missouri Monster.” While the bulk of the sightings of the cryptid were centered around Marzolf Hill (Star Hill) at the center of town, several of the townsfolk living along the river also claimed encounters with the unknown beast - including Ellis Minor (63), who said that he observed the creature attempting to cross these roads from the tree line to the riverfront late one evening. The reports that summer created a world-wide media “monster frenzy” that saw a multitude of reporters, investigators and Monster Hunters descend upon the small town - all looking for the Mysterious Monster. MOMO: THE MONSTER OF MARZOLF HILL - Louisiana, Missouri. On July 11, 1972 a tall, hairy, foul-smelling “Bigfoot-like” creature was seen along the tree line of this back yard at the foot of wooded Marzolf Hill. The monstrous beast was carrying a bloody, dead dog under one of its long, hirsute arms. The witnesses to this strange cryptid encounter - Terry Harrison (8), Wally Harrison (5), and Doris Harrison (15) - were terrified by the weird hairy hominid in their back yard and notified their father, Edgar, who then informed other townsfolk and officials. Subsequent media reports, local hysteria and further reported encounters (along with some tracks) created a “Monster Hunting Frenzy” for weeks in the region. The elusive cryptid soon gained a sensational name: “MoMo: The Missouri Monster.” The main focal area of the monster hunting remained the woods of Louisiana’s Marzolf Hill with the Harrison property becoming “MoMo Central” for several weeks. Eventually, though, as is the case with all small town monster frenzies, the reports dried up and the sensational press moved on to other interests - with the creature never being found/captured and the Mystery of MoMo never truly being resolved. Another Cryptid Encounter turned American Folktale Legend. So just what was seen on the roads and in the woods around Louisiana, Missouri in 1972? Was it a fantastical Unknown Beast still worthy of looking for and considering? Or was MoMo actually a group of beastly teen locals clad in old fur coats who successfully punked the tabloid news, monster buffs, and fellow townsfolk? Theories abound - we may never know the full reality. MoMo the Missouri Monster of Marzolf Hill, now a legend, remains a mystery that can only be wondered about and speculated upon. AN ALIEN CALLED “MOMO” - Colorized illustration of a hairy “alien” by Hal D. Crawford from the 1970 book “The Aliens” by Hal D. Crawford, Hayden Hewes and Kietha Hewes. While more representative of the variety of “alien creatures” allegedly observed by witnesses in South American states in the 50s and 60s, this illustration is often referenced as an accurate depiction of the “Bigfoot-like” cryptid - called “MoMo - The Missouri Monster” - reportedly seen in the wooded areas around Louisiana, Missouri in the summer of 1972. Incidentally, the area just south of Louisiana (near Elsberry) would experience an unexplained flap of UFO encounters and multiple bizarre cattle mutilations in 1978. Whether or not these strange encounters are somehow connected remains unknown.
