clink clink clink (dangles picture of my cat in front of you to get your attention)
I'm Ash, I love coding, reading stories, and interacting with art communities and stuff ( ꈍᴗꈍ)
My friend Angie and I are both passionate computer science students, and we decided to start our own first game development project!
We can take care of the coding aspect, but a game means music, visuals, a story, sound effects, etc, and we're already investing a lot of time on the former.
So while brainstorming, we thought, hey, what if we make this a community thing?
The idea is to gather submissions for the main character and art style, and collab with the participating artists on this! We want to choose one of the designs for the official design of the main character. Detail of the current game concept is in the form, but I'll paste it here under the cut.
This has to be above all fun for everyone involved, so feel free to send anything this inspires in you, even if it's just a doodle, and to message me if you have any questions !!!! You can also suggest stuff, or volunteer to participate in other ways ;3 If you can't, it'd also be lovely if you shared the word to those you think might be interested.
[edit: Submissions for the MC are closed, thank you so much to everyone! If you're still interested, you can still text me to check out other stuff.]
desc 1: game
Sonder is a rhythm and story game about a numb, simple character waking up in an unknown location, without memories.
The story advances by playing songs, fighting "beings" that are thinly veiled metaphors of fears and traumas, and gaining fragments of memories back. The latter allows for discovering other characters and their stories.
The goal of the game is to learn what happened, what got the character where they are, what motivated them before they lost their memories.
The storyline of the game is centered around a group of people who fail to understand that each of them have a different retelling and perspective.
desc 2: the character
From the first second of their appearance, the main character is presented as a fragmented soul, lost, frightened, and emotionally hollow. They stand in a state of quiet uncertainty, disconnected from any clear sense of identity or purpose. The only thing in their mind? Questions. Who am I? What am I meant to be? Where do I belong?
Their design and demeanor reflect this inner turmoil. Every detail, from posture to expression, should embody hesitation and emptiness, as if they are caught in a fork during a walk they were forced into. There is a visible absence of direction, a sense that they exist without truly living.
With this, you, as an artist, may try and put yourself in the characters internal world, where confusion and numbness shape not only their personality, but their very presence, and try to come up with your own design. When you imagine yourself in their place, what do you see? what's the first image that this description puts in your mind? Which design do you think best illustrates this?
No limitations are given; the character may be of any gender, ethnicity, and age!
This is a project born out of passion and love, you may add any traits you think suit the story and the character, and do what you think is fun and interesting to you.
