Artist Jeffrey Gibson, whose #MTAArts project at the Astoria Blvd (N,W) station was featured yesterday, is a member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and of Cherokee descent. His interdisciplinary artwork merges traditional Native American materials and forms with those of Western contemporary art to create a new hybrid visual vocabulary. Not far from Astoria Blvd station, Gibson's kaleidoscopic ziggurat “Because Once You Enter My House, It Becomes Our House” is now on view at Socrates Sculpture Park in the outdoor exhibition “Monuments Now”. The monumental sculpture will double as a stage for a trio of indigenous American artists, with performances to be filmed and released online.
