I AM A RAINBOW TOO, laminated glass artwork by artist Jeffrey Gibson at the Astoria Blvd (N,W) station, honors and reflects the evolving and diverse population of people from countless backgrounds and cultures that make up the communities in Astoria, Queens and New York City overall. I AM A RAINBOW TOO focuses on the #ROYGBIV colors of the light spectrum -- which has long been used by many communities to reflect diversity, inclusivity, and hope. Through this artwork, @jeffrune embraces and celebrates innumerable cultures by inserting a spectrum of skin tones into the already recognizable rainbow color scheme. The work is comprised of 102 glass panels, fabricated by Tom Patti Design, installed throughout the station’s mezzanine and platform levels. Each composition acts as a unique iteration of an expansive version of the rainbow, with elements that abstractly reference the sun, moon and cosmos.

Artist Jeffrey Gibson, whose #MTAArts project at the Astoria Blvd (N,W) station was featured yesterday, is a member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and of Cherokee descent. His interdisciplinary artwork merges traditional Native American materials and forms with those of Western contemporary art to create a new hybrid visual vocabulary. Not far from Astoria Blvd station, Gibson's kaleidoscopic ziggurat “Because Once You Enter My House, It Becomes Our House” is now on view at Socrates Sculpture Park in the outdoor exhibition “Monuments Now”. The monumental sculpture will double as a stage for a trio of indigenous American artists, with performances to be filmed and released online.
From Studio to Subway –MTA Arts & Design hosted a tour earlier today at The Armory Show at Pier 94, highlighting several artists with #MTAArts projects, whose work is on view at the art fair, including Derrick Adams, Diana Al-Hadid, Derek Fordjour, Jeffrey Gibson, Alex Katz, Vik Muniz and Mickalene Thomas. Participants heard about the artists’ studio practice, their process of creating permanent public art that resonates with the diverse audience of subway riders, their collaboration with fabricators and the challenges in translating traditional media to mosaic and glass. Artist Diana Al-Hadid joined the group to talk about her 34th Street-Penn Station (1) installation.
Congratulations to artists Mel Chin and Jeffrey Gibson on receiving esteemed MacArthur Fellowships! Chin’s thoughtful #MTAArts project “Signal” has activated the mezzanine of the Broadway-Lafayette Street/Bleecker Street (F/M/B/D) station in Manhattan since 1997 (rededicated in 2018). Gibson’s future #MTAArts project is currently in fabrication and we are excited to see his work take shape.

The colors!!!! The current exhibition by @jeffrune at @sitesantafe is beyond exciting 💥These are images from the first 3 rooms—only about 1/3 of the entire exhibition—which in it’s grand scope includes painting, sculpture, textiles, sound and video ⚡️⚡️⚡️ there’s so much that each part deserves a week to explore. If you have the opportunity to see any exhibition by Jeffrey Gibson, I can’t emphasize enough the power of his immersive works in person ❤️💖💚 #jeffreygibson #sitesantafe #artistinspiration #artinspiration #colorinspiration #artexhibition #santafeart (at SITE Santa Fe) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChfE3z4l5rG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
