And the Winner Is.....
The Beer Connoisseur has described GABS “as one of the best beer festivals in the world”. GABS originated as the Great Australian Beer SpecTAPular in 2011. Their logo seems to have updated the scope a little since then. GABS actually holds events in four locations each year: Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland and Brisbane. Three of the four cities are in the southeastern section of the country and one is in New Zealand. If that seems limited in scope, consider that two of the cities in Australia, Brisbane and Melbourne, are 1,668 km (1036 miles) apart. That’s an 18 hour drive on the left side of the road. Expanding to Perth, out on the west coast would mean the GABS folks would have to lug their gear 4,316 km (2681 miles) from Brisbane; a ride that takes 45 hours. That’s the same distance as New York to Los Angeles. You could fit 11 Texases in Australia.
Each December, GABS conducts a poll of the hottest 100 craft beers of the year in Australasia (Australia, New Zealand and some neighboring islands). The results are released in January (the beeriest month in the British Commonwealth). This year’s Hottest 100 has just been announced. The envelope please. And the winner is……….
Stone & Wood’s Pacific Ale! Pacific Ale is brewed with all Australian barley, wheat and Galaxy hops. It is described as being cloudy and golden with a big fruity aroma and refreshing finish. If it tastes half as good as it looks in that picture, I’m in.
As with any subjective poll, there is a wide range of opinions. Comments on Instagram range from “Amen! So bloody good” to “Complete horseshit”. Some of the backlash seems to be coming from the fact that Pacific Ale has been winning for years. GABS congratulates the winner noting that this is their tenth podium and fourth win overall, adding that PA is “easily the most successful beer in #GABSHottest100 history.” Instagrammer coleby.j comments “so 5 years ago.” The great thing is that everyone has an opinion and everyone is right. Some people find a beer that they like and stick with it. There’s nothing wrong with that. Some people are drawn to one or two styles. There’s nothing wrong with that. Some people are looking for something different, and that is what is causing the explosion in styles (some bizarre) and in the number of small breweries. Nothing wrong with that either.
Is there anything wrong with this beer?
Sure, the art on the can poses some questions, but I’m sure Single Hop by Moo Brew, brewed in Tasmania with locally grown Enigma hops and pale malt has plenty of fans looking for a refreshing 28 IBU brew.
Skimming through the Hottest 100 results, it appears that about 90% of the beers are brewed in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory. Is that where 90% of the population is, or is it just GABS territory? Does New Zealand have its own rankings? And what about Tasmania and the Northern Territory, both of which got shut out? C’mon, Moo Brew anybody? These questions need to be answered before the month runs out.
Because of all the things I've done with my life. I'm still overly proud of this pics photography.
Forgot I included the beer when I took that Banshees single shot - why are there so many fancy courses for how to pair wine with food, but not beer with records? Could be a winner!
Sydney Craft Beer Week - Tasmanian Providore Lunch
During Sydney Craft beer week we teamed up with our mates at the Royal Albert Hotel in Surry Hills and Moo Brew to put together a Tassie Providore luncheon where we launched our Whisky Aged Cider.
Was a great lunch that also included Mt Gnomon pork and Spring Bay Mussels.
Love to sample Australia's finest beers?
When in Hobart - we suggest the flavoursome and locally produced Moo Brew!

Froffie Weekend | BELGO - Moo Brew
Froffie Weekend | BELGO - Moo Brew
以前ブログで紹介したMoo brew(ムー・ブルー)ののBelgo(ベルジョと読みます)、今週はコレを行ってみましょう。
★★★ BELGO - Moo Brew
Moo Brew. I think I love you.
