Me playing Moon Cresta on a ZX Spectrum+2
UK 1985
thanks to having the same nightmare 3x in a row last night (being attacked by a swarm of benign little fluffy things from a 70s arcade game we can't remember the name of, oh wait it's coming back to us, it was moon cresta?) we suddenly remembered a very surreal time when we were 15 or 16 and we went with our mum and brother to heathrow airport to meet someone off a plane, which was delayed
we got bored and wandered about in the arrivals lounge and found this Moon Cresta arcade game and couldn't play it because we didn't have the change, so we just watched the tempter screen cycling for like 20 minutes (why yes, we are neurotrash)
and someone had managed to hack the screen that told you the names of the enemy sprites and how much each was worth, so instead of the names it said like
fuck off
cunt
fuck off
bastard
mr nugent
and we could only speculate that the game maintenance kid did this and mr nugent was his manager, but anyway it fascinated us that this was in full view in the middle of a busy airport and nobody had reported it - no of course we didn't, we were delighted
we did get to play moon cresta later and found it less stressful than space invader, because you didn't shoot at stuff, you just had to dodge being shot by them (at least for as far as we got in the game) - we hated space invaders when it came out as a pub arcade game, because for us it was like: you're going get killed, over and over, and getting good at it is just delaying your inevitable deaths (we would have loved Madoka Magika in our teens, well and buddhism, we guess)
oh eeeeeeee here's a pic of the beasts who swarmed us in our dream! for autistic reasons we'd decided we liked them in the actual game because they had snoots
look how cute, right? in the dream they were soft like bumble bees, it was just stressful being mobbed by them - and after the second dream we woke panting and saying "really?" and then the third time more like "ah come on!"
