Crystals are a Witches' Best Friend
We live in an era where crystals have become almost stupidly popular - which is lucky for us witches because a simple web search directs us to a whole plethora of crystal vendors. Crystals are extremely versatile, covering a wide range of uses for spellwork, and with their eye-catching and natural beauty, it's no wonder they're one of the mediums most sought after by new witches.
First, I recommend trusting your instinct. If you can't stop staring at a clear quartz point on Amazon, can't bring yourself to put a citrine cluster down while browsing a New Age shop, or find tumbled carnelian popping up literally everywhere you go (online and IRL), it's a pretty good indication you should purchase that specific gem.
However, if you haven't quite made up your mind or are still too overwhelmed, I've compiled a list of crystals good for just about any spell/ritual/purpose you may be attempting in the beginning stages of your witchcraft journey.
Technically part of the quartz family, Amethyst is your best friend when it comes to spiritual aid. This beautiful deep violet colored crystal is beneficial for promoting a restful sleep, enhancing/developing intuition and psychic abilities, and even aids in connecting us to the spiritual realm & our Higher Selves. It works best with the Third Eye and Crown chakras, and is believed to cure drunkenness (it's name is derived from the Greek word amethustos which roughly translates to "not drunk") so hang onto this after a rough night of drinking. 😉
A gorgeous yellow-gold gem, citrine was once known as sunstone, as ancient peoples believed it to hold the power of the sun. It is certainly a happy crystal, in that it promotes prosperity and abundance, enhances creativity, and transforms negative energy to positive (told you - Happy Crystal). This stone helps heal and encourage the Solar Plexus chakra.
Probably the most diverse crystal in this list (aside from quartz, anyway), Fluorite comes in a variety of colors ranging from blue to green to purple and even a rainbow of them all! I'll try to keep this post brief because I could go on and on about this particular crystal (it's at the top of my Crystals to Buy Next list 😍), so I'll give each color it's own mini section:
Blue Fluorite: Calming, promotes rational thinking, soothes mental/emotional chaos, encourages communication, & keeps you focused. Works best with Throat Chakra.
Green Fluorite: Energizing, cleanses and detoxes chakras, helps heartbreak, & removes excess energy that can harm your well-being. Works best with Heart Chakra.
Purple Fluorite: Connects one to Higher Self, heightens psychic abilities/intuition, sharpens mental clarity, & eases confusion/worry/anxiety. Works best with Third Eye and Crown Chakras.
Rainbow Fluorite: Balances chakras as well as the mind/body/spirit, absorbs & neutralizes negative energies, & raises metaphysical consciousness. Works best with Solar Plexus, Heart, Throat, Third Eye, & Crown Chakras (a fantastic multitasking crystal!)
This crystal looks like it was a gift from Naiads. Labradorite's swirling colors can range from milky clear to translucent grey, with flashes of blue, purple, or green when catching the light just so. It is a high-vibration stone, making it beneficial to beginner witches. It enhances communication with the Divine or higher beings, assists in tapping into psychic energy as well as intuition, balances the mind and spirit, protects against negative energy, and cleanses and heals the aura. Naturally, these aspects makes it the perfect stone for aiding the Third Eye and Crown Chakras.
A gorgeous milky-white crystal, moonstone is strongly connected with the Divine and Feminine energies (duh, because women ARE divine 😉). During the ever-changing moon cycles, it can be worn to ease the effects the phases have on the body/psyche. It encourages peace and harmony, communication with the higher realms, and is great for charging lunar water. Best used with the Crown Chakra.
Finally, we have come to one of the most used crystals by witches. There are dozens of variations of quartz, each with their own powers and properties. For sanity's sake, I'll just be explaining clear, smoky, and rose quartz. Much like with fluorite, I'll divide each into their own section.
Clear Quartz: Amplifies energies, cleanses spaces, works as a jack-of-all-trades with healing almost any conditions and works with all chakras, cleanses and charges crystals (so definitely have some of these with your collection), provides protection, and can be placed in rooms for protection/cleansing.
Rose Quartz: Promotes and strengthens all types of love, encourages joy and emotional healing, instills calm and peacefulness. Works best with the Root and Heart Chakras.
Smoky Quartz: Absorbs negative energy, increases positive energy, amplifies vibrational energies, detoxifies, and promotes grounding. Works best with Root and Crown Chakras.
A quick side note: the shape of a crystal can change and amplify certain properties. Chunk crystals lack any extreme facets (think of a lumpy geode - although geodes technically fall under the Chunk category despite having facets) and are best for cleansing the atmosphere in living spaces and work environments. Cut crystals (in the same way diamonds are "cut" for jewelry) have been shaped specifically for enhancing sparkle and capturing light, which intensifies the crystal's energies. Tumbled stones are crystals that have been smoothed out and feel comforting to hold. These are best for taking on the go or keeping close to you. Lastly, Wand or Pointed crystals are rough on one end and formed into a point on the other, which allows the energies of the crystals to be directed in a more targeted fashion (exactly in the way a magic wand works).
And with that, I hope you enjoyed! If you would like me to do one giant masterlist of crystals that serve the same purpose within witchcraft, let me know in the comments! Thanks for reading, have a wonderful day/night. 💜
