By the time I caught up on StarTripper!!, I had a queue of podcasts ready to go. The audio fiction community are pretty great about promoting each other’s work, either via crossovers or ads or just plugs before or after an episode. Then there are the voice actors, writers, and others whose name I’ll hear attached to a project and decide to check it out just on that basis. Which is all a long way of saying that from this point on, I’ll be reviewing podcasts in a rough order, because I’ve forgotten the exact order in which I listened.
Definitely one of my early podcasts, though, was Moonbase Theta Out. MTO is a fascinating show, partially because it’s just so fun to watch it evolve. It’s another one that’s still ongoing, although I’m pretty sure we’re in the final season. But what a ride!
Moonbase Theta Out started as a single voice drama, with the conceit that we were listening to the audio reports of one Roger Bragado-Fisher, communications, Moonbase Theta. Played to perfection by Leeman Kessler, Roger intersperses his commentary on what’s happening on the base with brief personal messages to his husband (and their two dogs) back home on Earth. It’s a low key kind of show, anchored by Kessler’s performance as a man desperately missing the love of his life.
As the show goes on, they start adding to the cast, filling out the universe, and a story of survival and rebellion emerges. Every member of the cast is amazing (my personal favorite is Tau Zaman as Dr. Ashwini Ray, fanfic writing vaguely evil supergenius), and the unfolding story is full of tension and excitement.
Give it a listen; you won’t be disapointed.
