Adrian hated big parties.
Actually, he didn’t mind big house parties where the more the merrier – full of drunk teenagers and too-loud music. The types of parties he hated were the galas his parents held once in a while. Usually he could charm his way out of them (promising his mother three more modelling sessions than usual for this week), but today, he didn’t even bother trying.
It was the 25th Anniversary of Alex & Vera, his parents’ fashion brand, and their 22nd wedding anniversary – he would probably be the worst son in the world if he missed this.
So there he sat, next to Darien and Anastasia, dressed in a suit that was a little too tight on him (‘the perfect fit’ his mother insisted), and his hair hid under a black leather snapback (‘At least it’s Armani, and black.” he argued with his mother when they were leaving the house).
He looked up at his parents in the front, who were holding mics in front a huge projector screen, playing a slideshow of the beginnings of their brand.
“Today, we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of our brand.” his father started, looking out into the crowd with a small smile. He was almost a different person when he was presented to the public – so calm and poised, as opposed to the energetic and playful state he usually was around Adrian.
“When Alex and I first started this brand, we were just students at Parson, working on our final project. We are truly humbled and honoured that we made it this far.” his mother continued the speech.
Yeah yeah yeah. Adrian’s heard all of this before. His mother stood in front of him just hours ago, practicing her lines over and over again.
“Fast forward three years, we had our first son enter our arms – Aiden James Wang, and we got married. I couldn’t have asked for a better wife and mother to our children.” his father said, right before leaning in and giving his mother a small kiss on the cheek.
The audience cooed. Adrian gagged.
“Fast forward twenty-something more years and here we are, Aiden, married to the loveliest daughter-in-law a woman could have, our son Adrian, who continue to amaze us with his impeccable taste in fashion…” his mother strained the last few words, looking straight at Adrian and his choice of accessory.
“Love you mom!” Adrian yelled grinning. His mother only flashed him a tight ‘see-you-when-we-get-home’ smile.
“And our little Vivian, who couldn’t make it here today.” Thankfully, his father cut in.
“But today is not about us, folks.” He continued, surprising Adrian – this was not in the previous rehearsals. “Sure, we’re still young and we’re not dying yet but we’re looking forward to the next generation. The last time you were here, I told you all that we would be passing our brand to Adrian, instead of our first-born, Aiden. And today, we’re celebrating just that. We’re celebrating our second son, Adrian Jackson Wang.”
The audience began to clap, as his mother gestured for him to come up, leaving Adrian no choice but to make his way to the stage, confused on what this was about. Maybe he was going to get his own clothing line under his parents’ brand, or a new car? His birthday WAS coming up—
His mother looked out at the audience and continued to speak. “As you all know, lineage is extremely important to people like us. Our children must have the most suitable matches for their future – the families must know each other, our corporations must be compatible and et cetera.” The audience nodded in agreement.
“And this is why we have gathered here today.” His father said with a bigger smile than before, his arm wrapping around Adrian’s shoulders. “To deliver this important news. A match for Adrian has been made.”
What? Adrian froze up, his smile turning from genuine to awkward.
“Our choice for Adrian’s fiancée was a difficult one, yes, but when I saw her photo – I knew she was the one. And seeing her here today just confirmed that.” His mother beamed at someone in the crowd – Adrian didn’t get a chance to catch who it was. His mind raced with possibilities – did he know her? Was it Anastasia? Oh God anyone but her that would be way too fucking awkward--
“May I present to you… Miss Ophelie Renee Tsukino, the newest model of Alex & Vera and the daughter of our family’s closest friends.”
The audience began to clap.
Adrian definitely hated big parties.
