Christopher Rush. Moonring Mirror.
Mirror, mirror on the board
A special note on card advantage!
Card advantage isn't always associated directly with "drawing cards."
Moonring Mirror is a 5 cost Artifact that states that whenever you draw a card, exile the top card of your library face down. Then, during you upkeep (as long as you control Moonring Mirror) you can swap your current hand for the exiled card(s) in exile. Basically, you have two hands (although you cannot look at the exiled "hand" while it is exiled)!
I've found recently that cards like Moonring Mirror work for my edh decks that don't have very strong "draw card" effects. For example, when I play my mono-red EDH deck, I struggle to find cards that help me maintain my card advantage. Howling Mine or Font of Mythos tend to help my opponents more than they help me (giving the decks that can draw cards more cards). However, Moonring Mirror can turn these extra draw effects into greater value for it's controller. Moonring Mirror also works well with other direct draw effects, such as the new card Loreseeker's Stone.
Moonring Mirror, though slow, helps "draw" extra cards. After I empty my hand, I can swap out for a different one, and then begin to build a new hand again. It's basically a delayed draw 2! For decks of mine like Ashling (the Pilgrim) and Baru (fist of Krosa) this is a welcome advantage. It is important to note that (as far as it's been ruled when i've played it) no one can look at the cards exiled by Moonring Mirror.
If Moonring Mirror is destroyed, I lose access to all of those exiled cards, which means if you are digging for a specific win-con, you may lose out. I don't really mind this drawback, since the mirror is seemingly unthreatening. There will be times where it is destroyed, just for kicks, but that seems otherwise unnecessary and rare.
Homes for Moonring Mirror:
Red/white/green decks lacking good draw power
Decks with intense draw power looking to draw even more cards
Decks with good artifact protection (i.e. Darksteel Forge and ways to keep it from being destroyed)
Decks that want to protect a certain win con by storing it in exile
SO.... there you have it! I hope you all enjoyed this brief article/comment/post! I'm still new to this, but this is something I'm going to try and do once a week.
If anyone has any advice/suggestions/ feedback, feel free to inbox me! Also, if the format should be different, please let me know!
Sincerely,
The Poster Child of Grixis (Happy New Year!)
