The idea of the swan came from the His Dark Materials universe - one of my favourite pieces of fiction since childhood - because I firmly believe Runaan's daemon would be a swan. Elegant and graceful, lethal and deadly, loyal to the end. And a symbol of everlasting love - because all he does is out of love, in the only way he knows.

I have a messed up Headcanon about these forms he takes: their based on some of his past victims. Not perfect copies mind you, but the specific elements each elf design has.

Example, he gave the Earthblood version pink crystals growing out of his arms because a previous earthblood elf he killed had that trait.
