Moonstruck is the most fascinating romcom. It's superstitious, it's aggressively practical. It doesn't love cheating but it doesn't condemn it either. Most of the people involved in romantic subplots are in their 70s. The main heroine is almost 40. Everybody's messy. Nobody's evil. Nic Cage is there.

Moonstruck is NOT just a dumb 40+ year old mom chick flick. It is one of the most deeply impactful movies ive ever seen. With extremely pungent themes about family, learning to love in a way you werent taught to, hopeless romanticism and superstitsion and how both can be a crutch against vunerability. How true love is honest, its honest that it can be beligerent but its accepting and peaceful at the end of the day. Every crazy thought and feeling you can have, is home to someone else. How to move on from the feeling that you have to settle for that final act of your life. Its not over. Its not over when your finace leaves you after you become an amputee, its not over when your husband dies and you marry the next man you date, its not over when you think your mom is dying, its not over when you become bored of your wife, its not over when your an old man with half a dozen dogs and nothing better to do than take care of them, its not over after you get bored of who you are and every new young girl you date moves on from the "boring you". Everyday you have a choice to love those around you, including yourself, everyday you have to choose not to settle, everyday you have to work out your squabbles, big or small, to show your loved ones that you do not have them around just because its easy. You have them around because it is hard, but they are worth it. Loving them is a choice, a hard choice, one that you wont settle with and regret.
A promise of love that deep, found, or specifically pointed out when missing, between like almost every character makes this movie SO much more than just "a romance movie for moms because cher is in it". I love you moonstruck 1987, i will defend you from all the dads who were "forced to watch it, enjoyed nic cages performance, but ulitmately couldnt stand it cuz its just a 'romance' movie w cheating".

This librarian happens to believe that Moonstruck is a deeply underrated film (in no small part because of Cher's perfect face and hair) so a Moonstruck AU set in our beloved village was always going to be a winner. This fic is creative, unique and dramatic, just like the film it takes it's inspiration from, and it's for those who are frightened by the concept of a WIP, you're in luck! The penultimate chapter has just been posted so you have plenty of time to read the other chapters and watch the movie in preparation for the finale!
