Here are all the NPCs I got the pleasure to design for MIDST - MOONWARD! It was a blast and super nice to work on some sci-fi Also super fun to watch the cast discover them during the episodes. And mission accomplished because they found most of them hot
I don’t know how to describe how much I love the midst cosmos. It single handily got me back into writing. It made me feel comfortable being me- the real me- the me that is weird and silly and nerdy and all the things society told me were too much. It gave me a community of weird nerds. It helped me process my deep rooted religious trauma and all the people pleasing and anxiety and depression that came with that. It gave me lgbtq+ characters I could relate to as an lgbtq+ person. It helped me figure out things about me my gender. As a Minneapolis resident, it has helped me by providing escapism and a place to process this year. Midst has done more for me than I ever thought a podcast could.
Two interesting tidbits from my current rewatch of Moonward:
when protecting the party from Dark Sonia's bad vibes aura, Mother Trauma activates purple energy specifically from the dark mica shard that will become the Ship
Dark Sonia's approach erases the doors and paintings in the Fold-created hallway, turning them dark
The first point makes me wonder if we are going to ever see something similar in Unend, especially with Dot advancing as a Mother - could they, too, activate that kind of power from the ship? Would it cost them like it did Mother Trauma? I don't think we'll see an exact repeat of that situation since obviously it exists in Moonward, but it remains a functionality not yet repeated. The ingenuity we've seen from the crew of the Ship in manipulating the dark mica have been largely "scientific" with the use of punch disks. Cleo spontaneously manifesting a sword is more of an edge case, but still within the "extrusion" technology. Maybe it's time for some Motherly wizardry.
The second point doesn't necessarily reveal some kind of deep mechanics, and is certainly at least in part for visual flavor and gravitas, but I find some symbolism in it. The doors are full of (apparently) trauma, and the paintings a jumbled mix of past-present-possible future, but Dark Sonia's presence erases all of it with darkness. In Midst, Phineas Thatch receives a guided tour through the metaphysical door Fold realm and it's positive like therapy; in Moonward, Walden Orlok walks into his worst memory and immediately began to succumb to it, and would have been lost forever if not for the intervention of the party. The doors are dangerous. But they're dangerous in a sort of neutral way: they contain Big Emotions that can have power, but they are possible to navigate, especially with help, with possibility of good outcomes. Dark Sonia's deal is obliteration: a total subsuming of the self in the worst emotions and the worst outcome that could happen in a door. We see a flicker of Walden's eyes turning red in his door memory, just like Mother Trauma's eyes turn red once he is vulnerable to Dark Sonia. So it seems to me like Dark Sonia's shadows consuming the doors and paintings is sort of like... consuming possibility. Chances. Opportunities. No information to be explored, no choices to be made. Do not pass go, do not bravely confront your trauma, you are express lane to the Bad Ending. I do hope we see Dark Sonia again, but also, what the fuck is up with these ship-sized doors.
THERE'S NOBODY DOING STORY TELLING LIKE MIDST.

Do you think in the Midst universe, the term "Mother" comes from "moth"
