I saw you mention the "artists bump" on your finger and honestly my first reaction was something akin to "wait, other people have that too???" so I googled it and omg! I've had mine since 3rd grade (I'm 23 now) and noticed it got worse (swelled and generally hurt) with wood pencils so I've been using mechanical religiously since. For some reason it never occurred to be that it's something others get as well. Thank you for mentioning it! :D
yes!!!! this is a legit thing!! i’ve yet to meet an artist that doesn’t have or hasn’t had a bump/callus! idk about the technicalities of it but as far as experience goes wood pencils can be brutal! i have a new respect for those squishy pencil grippers which are far more common on mechanical pencils- if you have some i’d put them on everything. i also really really recommend trying to learn to draw/sketch lightly if you don’t already, it’ll help a lot. (I’ve started to write in caps because my cursive/default handwriting is too heavy handed...)
It’ll always get a little red and swollen if you’re on a drawing binge, but soaking em and putting grippies and drawing lightly will help infinitely!
