Taking things back
Elena had witness the most horrific thing ever. Matt Donovan's death. It jolted her humanity back on. It made her realize how fleeting life could be. And she went around apologizing to all her friends. The ones that she hurt so badly. Because no matter how "immortal" some of them are supposed to be, they still could die. Vampire's lives could end in a second even if they weren't supposed to. The one man she truly wanted to make amends with was Elijah Mikaelson. Her heart broke more so by the words she said to him, than anyone else. Because they had a strong relationship. It was rocky because they have deceived each other in the past, but it was still a good friendship.
They admired each other and she said awful things to him. She wasn't ready to address Kol yet. Though she had a feeling it would be if he agreed to hear her out. Can't run from that one. You kill a friend's brother it has to be addressed. Elena felt terrible for taking Kol away from that perspective. And if it was just Klaus and Rebekah mourning she could handle it better. But it was Elijah the only original she actually cared about.
She heard he was going to New Orleans and wanted to catch him before he left. The first place she went was Rebekah's home to see if he was there. She was nervous. What would he say to her. Would he turn her away. Not speak to her. Never forgive her again. If that happened she'd have to accept it. But it was worth a try. She knocked on Rebekah's door praying Elijah wouldn't answer it. But with her luck he would and Rebekah would be elsewhere.
