I escape
To the woods
Within my mind
And my fears
Dissipate
In the wind"
Mordran - The Midnight Woods
Mordran - The Midnight Woods (Full Album Premiere, 2024)
Releasing on March 29 after a full-length and two EPs last year, the Swedish one-man project MORDRAN returns with another piece we have the pleasure to premiere today. With a cold and raw ambiance fitting for the season it was conceived in, "The Midnight Woods" promises us to be the embrace for a long night to wake up from slumber in a different realm, drawing as usual from the occult and mythical passages perfectly embodied in a mixture of ambient black with post-black and synth hints, blackgaze and dark folk. You can listen to tracks 2 and 5 until release to keep the heat (or cold) for this thrilling new work, but feel free to take a seat with us for the full journey today!

Twice already has our Network featured Mordran's music on the short history of our channel, two times in which we helped share its lo-fi, minimalistic take on black metal into the world. The reclusive musician produces quite a lot of material, however, and has managed to refine it further and further into something different each time; while always leaning strongly on atmosphere and ambience, what we see in "Within and Beyond", the project's latest release, is something that is no longer reminiscent of early 90s raw atmobm, nor of gentle DSBM like in "Anemone", our second upload by them. There's aspects of both things of course, moments in which you can more easily veer into violence and despair, but what seems to prevail here is something between blackgaze and post-black, bringing the gentleness and euphoria to the forefront like a calmer, slower, more focused hybrid of Møl and Unreqvited - something which the last track, "The Ephemeral Self", brings into a logical conclusion by slowing down and rarefying the actual sound so much, it becomes closer to atmospheric noise music tham to anything else this writer can think... and in a way that actually makes sense. Mordran keeps on producing music that soothes the soul in unlikely ways, and we're here for more!
