Let’s talk about some Austrian food, dessert edition.
My favorite part of any meal is dessert. Here’s some popular one’s that we’ll likely find in Vienna.
Desserts:
Apfelstrudel- The ever-so-famous apple strudel. Made with a buttery flaky puff pastry crust, filled with a warm apple filling, and served with hot vanilla sauce. Many websites recommended getting this dessert at Cafe Hawelka so that’s definitely somewhere we should stop. 😊
Topfenstrudel- This is pretty much the cheesecake version of Apfelstrudel. PRAISE BE CHEESECAKE. It’s made using soft Quark cheese.
Buchteln- If you’ve ever wondered what the dessert version of a dinner roll is, this is it. These sweet rolls are made of yeast dough filled with jam or curd. Traditionally it’s filled with plum jam and served with hot vanilla sauce.
Esterházy Torte- This is one of the desserts that I really really want to try. It’s buttercream spiced with cognac or vanilla sandwiched between four or five layers of almond meringue dough. On top it’s iced with a fondant glaze and decorated with a chocolate stripped pattern. FUN FACT: This dessert is name for a price and diplomat of the Austrian Empire.
Kaiserschmarrn- Thick fluffy pancakes chopped into small pieces and topped with rum-soaked raisins, apple or plum sauce, cinnamon, and powdered sugar. Does that not sound amazing?? IHOP needs to step their game up.
Krapfen- Last but not least, we have a simply delicious donut. In the center of this fluffy donut is apricot jam.
