Happy 101st Birthday to Fannie Lou Hamer. I’ve told parts of her story several times on here. I know who Mrs. Hamer is because of my Mama @camerabug3. My Mama, and my Pops too, always pushed for my sister and I to know about the history of African Americans and I’m eternally thankful for that push; it has helped me over and over again. The woman with Mrs. Hamer is Ella Baker, a key founder of Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. They’re together in 1964. The current photos are from my time at Mrs. Hamer’s memorial garden in her hometown of Ruleville, Mississippi. It wasn’t planned but I was first off the bus and got to open the gate for the garden; I teared up almost instantly. Being there felt like a pilgrimage. There’s a quote that is cropped out in the last photo, above her head: “No American can rest while any American is denied his rights...” That connects to a quote I love from Mrs. Hamer: “Nobody’s free until everybody’s free.” I’m going to leave you with words from Mrs. Hamer from her speech at the 1964 Democratic National Convention where she represented the integrated Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, where she gave a speech outlining her history in the movement and quest for voting rights and human rights including her brutal treatment in a Winona, Mississippi jail in 1963: “All of this is on account we want to register, to become first-class citizens, and if the Freedom Democratic Party is not seated now, I question America. Is this America, the land of the free and the home of the brave, where we have to sleep with our telephones off the hooks because our lives be threatened daily, because we want to live as decent human beings in America? Thank you.” YouTube has the whole speech, it’s powerful to hear it in her voice. Right on Fannie Lou Hamer! #fannielouhamer #rulevillemississippi #mississippifreedomdemocraticparty #morethan28days #freedomsummer https://www.instagram.com/p/Bol5PtchibC/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=897yiy950ltc

James Baldwin from an interview on Henry Moganthau III's "The Negro and the American Promise",1963:
"What white people have to do is try and find out in their own hearts why it was necessary to have a nigger in the first place, because I'm not a nigger. I'm a man, but if you think I'm a nigger, it means you need it...If I'm not a nigger and you invented him--you, the white people, invented him--then you've got to find out why. And the future of the country depends on that, whether or not it's able to ask that question."
