Stevie is one of the single biggest influences in my life and I’ve enjoyed her work ever since I can remember. I’m happy I finally took the time to draw her. I post both with and without the crystal because I couldn’t decide which I preferred. 

Also wow it’s been a long time since I’ve used this blog... I’ve been drawing, I’ve just been dealing with a lot over the last year. Hopefully I will be starting to use it more frequently in the future.

This is a project I started back in 2015, one in a series of re-draws I had done to help me boost my confidence in my skills and keep me moving forward by proving I wasn't the same inexperienced artist I had been ten years prior when I did the original drawing (I will not be showing the original as it is super, super embarrassing, haha). 

The pencil sketch that is overlaid on my Photoshop work is from 2015, and all of the Photoshop work was done in late 2016 up until present day. I took a lot of time to try and get the affect I would be satisfied with because I remember doing the original and being so frustrated I couldn't do better in practically every aspect of the drawing from shading, posing and background. This piece took around 25 hours due to constantly pushing myself to try new things and and experimenting with my first tablet (I know, what artist gets their first tablet at 16, don’t judge). 

The simplicity of the background and use of textures was highly influenced by animation, specifically the director Genndy Tartavosky's work as well as Cartoon Saloon. I know this style is very different from most of my other work, I hope I can put this newer style of mine to good use in the future.

I’ve been working in two very separate art styles since 2011, this piece was about meshing the two of them together while also pulling a little inspiration from Japanese anime styles; as they were a huge influence on me and getting me into art when I was fourteen. The reason the anime influence came into this piece specifically because I created these characters at the height of my anime influential stage. 

Lately with my art I’ve been very indulgent with myself. I’ve been trying to treat myself to very personal work; creating a lot of pieces that would make younger me very happy regardless of how the today me feels about them. It’s a very strange sensation. 

When I was younger I had this ambition and desire to do better. I had these dreams to create animated stories, but I was a poor kid with lined paper and sharpies. Now there’s nothing wrong with these tools for art at all, in fact you can create great things with them! However when you’re 14 and day dreaming about bold, saturated, flat colors and smooth line work that leaps off your page and into an action packed anime series, it leaves you wanting more. So being able to take those same characters and color them in Photoshop, it makes your younger self very happy. 

It’s weird to think these characters are fourteen years old now and that I was fourteen when I created them. Maybe this year I’ll do more with my personal stories.

A year and a half later I finally got this scanned and touched up.

This is acrylic ink and colored pencil. About 20 hours of work.
