Morgana Arnim, niece of Lady Cornelia Arnim. Definitely a bit of an odd duck among the Blue Lions, but she’s trying her best. Clearly has low opinions on the Church of Seiros but she’s far from the only one.

I am absurdly attached to the idea of some Agarthans having slit pupils. Arguably it’s a ‘logical’ genetic modification to help deal with the low light environment of life underground. Really though, it’s just to look cool.

Morgana keeping the surname Arnim. Morgana deciding that Cornelia Arnim--the REAL Cornelia Arnim--deserved more than a knife in the back and her face stolen. Morgana keeping the stolen name because that is the only way she can think to honor her. Morgana deciding that there will be no more Cornalia Arnims, no more good people unlucky enough to have a face her people find convenient.

For some context, Morgana was assigned by TWSITD to infiltrate the Blue Lions with the cover of Lady Cornelia’s ‘niece’. But the best laid plans have a way of going awry as she finds genuine friendship and even young love.

I am going to talk about Morgana Arnim, my Fire Emblem Three Houses OC. I almost never get to talk about my problematic fave.

So, for some reminders about Morgana: she I s a transgender woman and is also an Agarthan! She’s ambiguously pansexual as well but she’s so disgustingly in love with Dimitri it almost never comes up.

8. Have they had any struggles with their identity, be it due to internal or external reasons?

Honestly the biggest struggle Morgana has faced with her identity has been other people’s reactions to it. Her understanding of gender is definitely not entirely in step with Faerghus’ gender norms—she’s a woman who is just as skilled with a blade as her dark magic and also. She happens to have a penis. She doesn’t see any of those things as contradictory. Her friends in the Blue Lions need a minute to wrap their heads around it (“you can just change your gender if you don’t like the one you’re born with? You can *do* that?”) and they occasionally ask stupid questions but it’s never been a problem to anyone who matters. Being trans is part of her identity but it’s not the entirety of her self-identity, you know?

Dimitri is the embodiment of ‘he a little confused but he’s got the spirit’. (And if anyone misgenders his queen he will beat them to death with his bare hands.)

9. Are there cultural or lore specific aspects to their identity?

Yes! To grossly oversimplify in the world of FE3H Agarthans seem to be the people with the most gender-non conforming stuff going on. One Agarthan character, Arval, is canonically genderless using they/them pronouns. Cornelia Arnim/Cleobulus, is usually identified as ‘she/her’ but is also referred to with ‘he/him’ pronouns by Thales, the leader of the Agarthans. Some players believe this makes her a trans woman, others think Cleobulus is a genderfluid monarch.

With that context, in the version of Agarthan culture that lives in my head, they’re still the technofascist death cult who live underground an consider themselves the superior race to the humans who live on the surface. They also genuinely don’t really care about your gender identity or sexual orientation so long as you’re loyal to the cult.

Basically all of that to say, Morgana being a trans woman would have been no big deal in a day to day sense but the message would be how ‘superior’ or ‘enlightened’ they are ‘while the surface dwellers still chain themselves to antiquated ideals of simple flesh’. And as Cornelia is her mother (well a parent who contributed genetic material—they do test tube clone babies) Morgana’s egg would have cracked when she was still young.
