Nothing to Me
“Let’s break up.”
“What?” Morgan blinked in shock, his heart stopped in his chest and his blood ran cold. Had he heard that right?
“Let’s end this now.” Julius repeated, his crimson eyes refusing to meet his, “we can’t be together anymore.”
“Y-You’re kidding, right?” Morgan said with a small nervous laugh, praying it was all an unfunny joke. But would Julius even joke about something like this? His smile faded as he looked at Julius’s darkened expression. His dark purple eyes widened at the sight of Julius’s arms trembling, he reached a hand out towards him, “Jules, what’s going on-”
“Don’t touch me.” Julius scowled, his hand swiftly moved to smack Morgan’s away. The mage instinctively flinched back in shock, the pain it left was nothing compared to the pain blooming in his chest. Julius glared coldly, holding his hand close to him, “did you really think this was going to work? How naive of you.”
“Julius…” Morgan’s voice cracked as he addressed his lover... or… he refused to think that, he couldn’t. But his heart felt like it was slowly being shredded piece by piece like paper the longer he stood there.
As much as Julius seemed to hide his own pain, Morgan could see it clearly, “I know something’s bothering you… please… please tell me what’s going on!” He begged, tears welling in his eyes, “please Jules…”
“Don’t call me that,” Julius snapped, his expression twisted into anger, “I’m no longer…” he seemed to hesitate for a second, “your Jules.”
“J-Jules..” Morgan tried his best to blink back a few tears, “please… whatever’s bothering you… we can fix it.. we’re a couple, we should talk about this…”
“We can’t ‘fix’ anything when there’s nothing to fix. This foolishness of yours simply needs to end.” Julius countered coldly, “I have no desire to be with you any longer. You… mean nothing to me.”
It’s a lie, it has to be.
“Y-you can’t mean that…” Morgan backed away as his eyes pleading for reassurance that he didn’t mean those words.
Those words could not possibly have come from someone who was so fiercely protective of him, from someone that had turned to him when nightmares struck, from someone who feared the mere thought of hurting the one he loved, Julius’s hurtful words couldn’t be genuine.
Then why?
Why wouldn’t he tell him?
Why was he saying this instead?
But what if it’s true? Whispered the doubtful part of his mind.
“then.. did our time together… mean nothing to you?” Morgan choked out as one final plea.
Julius’s turned his head away with a scoff, “that’s right.”
It’s not true. Morgan thought, a small ember of hope flickered within him, his eyes aren’t meeting mine…but it didn’t do anything to reassure him, rather that ember of hope was trying its best to stay lit during a rainstorm.
Morgan tried to steady his breathing, his voice trembled violently with pain and fear, “I don’t believe you… you won’t even look at me when you say that…” Tears had already begun to fall from his face, leaving little droplets on the carpet, “please…” he begged one last time, “please tell me it’s not true.”
It couldn’t be true.
It couldn’t be… please don’t let it be true
Time seemed to slow as Julius slowly turned to look at him.
Morgan felt the ground under him give out as blood red eyes glared coldly at him.
“you were nothing but entertainment to me.”
A sharp pain thrust into his heart as if someone had thrown a spear right through it. He flinched back from Julius, his throat closing, he couldn’t breathe, couldn’t see clearly as tears streamed down his face, those cruel words echoed in his mind. Memories he held precious to him spread with cracks within him.
“Leave.” Julius growled through gritted teeth, “I no longer wish to see you.”
Morgan pushed past Julius, He didn’t know where he was going, he just wanted to be anywhere but here not after what had been said. He didn’t care for the heroes passing by him. His world was spiraling into chaos, warm worlds he treasured were being snatched away from him left and right.
“Your optimism is one of the many things I love about you.”
How naive
“To finally call you mine fills me with joy.”
Let’s end this now
“You know I’ll always protect you.”
I no longer wish to see you.
“I love you, Morgan.”
You were nothing but entertainment to me.
What was real? Morgan choked on a sob, confusion and doubt ate at his heart.
Was any of it real?
Suddenly Morgan crashed into one of the heroes, he ended up stumbling backwards and landed on his rear, “I-I’m so sorry!” The hero he bumped into yelped, “are you ok?”
Morgan looked up at the hand outstretched to help him up. It was Alcryst. But why… why did it have to be this version of him? All dressed up in wedding attire? Why did the world wish to torment him so?
Morgan had dreamt many times of the day he and Julius would’ve wed, seeing Alcryst in front of him right now in this moment, it only brought him pain. He knew it wasn’t the archer’s fault but why did Morgan have to bump into him of all people? The mage rubbed his eyes with the back of his hand, soaking his gloves with warm tears.
Alcryst’s ruby eyes widened with worry when he saw Morgan’s tears, “w-what’s wrong? Did something happen?”
Morgan didn’t reply, instead he stood up quickly, bumping into Alcryst as he disappeared into his room, locking the door behind him. He collapsed at the doorway, burying his face into his knees, his shoulders shaking with sobs.

I’m sorry, Julius thought bitterly as he furiously swiped the tears from his eyes when Morgan’s footsteps faded, his cold face now broken with vulnerability and tears. Regret tore at his heart, so many words he desperately wanted to take back. I’m sorry my love. I’m sorry…
It was necessary. . It was the only way for Morgan to be happy. He reminded himself angrily as he sauntered back to his room, his usually vibrant eyes now dull and downcast as they dripped tears onto the floor.
Would Morgan really be happy after this? He found himself wavering. Did I really need to go that far? Am I really making the right choice? He pushed the thought aside. This was the only way to ensure Morgan would leave him. Staying with Julius was nothing but a death sentence for him, no matter how much he hoped for a brighter future with the prince, it just wasn’t possible.
“What do you think would happen once the contract ends and poor Morgan is in front of you?”
The thought haunted his mind, he didn’t want to know the answer to that.
Morgan deserved better than him.
Julius’s hand slowly turned the doorknob as he pushed his way inside his room, it felt colder and more empty. He mindlessly perched himself on the windowsill and started to stare down aimlessly at the view below, allowing himself to silently cry.
The sky had slowly slowly changed from a bright orange into a deep blue when the doorknob jingled. His head turned to the sound. A tiny part of him wondered if it was Morgan which immediately made him want to hit himself, why would Morgan ever want to see me after what I’ve done?
Of course it wasn’t Morgan, instead Julius’s half brother poked his head in, “Seliph,” The red haired prince greeted curtly, trying to hide the crack in his voice.
“I heard what happened between you and Morgan,” Seliph whispered, “and I must ask you, why?”
“That is none of your concern, brother,” Julius spat, “if this was what you wanted to discuss with me then leave.” He turned around, making his disinterest clear and started to return to the windowsill, “I have no interest in discussing anything with you.”
“Did it have something to do with Loptous?” Seliph asked.
“Does that matter to you?” Julius muttered darkly, his back still turned.
“Wouldn’t it have been possible for-“
Julius snapped and shoved Seliph roughly into the wall, his armor smashed hard enough into the wall to leave a dent, “of course I thought of that,” he hissed crumpling Seliph’s collar in his fist, “time and time again we searched together and found nothing.” He glared into Seliph’s sparkling blue eyes, “oh how stupid I was to ever hope I could escape.”
“I am the heir of Loptous’s kin, I am bound to him. Soon, I will…” He whispered lowly, his mind closing off the possibilities, “what life does Morgan have with me?” His hand trembled, “I don’t have a future.”
The prince let out a bitter laugh, a few tears dripped down his cheeks which he used his free hand to swipe off. He shot hateful daggers at Seliph, “You already know that don’t you, Seliph? Prancing around the castle, regarded as the legendary hero who slew me?”
Seliph opened his mouth to say something but fell silent again, Julius turned his head away, blinking back some tears, “I’ve accepted my fate. But Morgan? He deserves better than me,” he released his grip on Seliph’s collar and stepped back, allowing his half brother to straighten his clothes, “It’s better if he forgot about me and lived happily.”
“Don’t you think you two could’ve-“
“Enough.” Julius interrupted coldly, he knew what Seliph was going to say. He didn’t want to hear it, it did nothing but remind him of Morgan’s optimism, “just leave.” Seliph hesitated but soon turned and exited the room, closing the door quietly behind him.
Julius slowly stepped over to his desk where a cat plush sat, its grumpy red eyes stared at him. “It’s to keep away the nightmares when I’m not around!” Morgan’s voice chirped in his head, tears welled up in Julius’s eyes, he picked up the black cat and collapsed onto the bed.
“Ju-Ju,” he whispered to it as he buried his face into the cat, soaking it with tears, “I don’t think I can say goodbye…” Morgan was going back to his world soon, leaving him forever. As selfish as it was, he wanted to see Morgan one last time. But if he did, he feared he would break and choose to endanger his beloved.
He couldn’t let that happened.
I’m sorry, my love.
He eventually drifted off into uneasy, dreamless sleep, clutching the cat close to him like a lifeline.

“How would I describe Prince Julius?”
“Well... he has this aura that draws people close to him.”
“However… he’s colder than ice!”
“It’s not true,” Morgan mumbled to himself, his voice muffled as he buried his face into his knees. Why were these words about Julius suddenly coming to him? They did not match the kind prince he knew and loved.
“If I didn’t know any better, I wouldn’t even think he was human!” Morgan squeezed his eyes shut, hopelessly trying to drive away the words from his memory.
If you really weren’t human… Morgan thought as he gazed up at the ceiling, if I really didn’t mean anything to you….
Then why?
Why were you crying when you said those things to me?
——————————————————————
The summoning tree was packed with departing heroes, many of them saying their goodbyes to friends they made from other worlds. Morgan’s eyes were focused on the ground below, red from crying. The conversations around him seemed like they were drowned out, muffled and incoherent as if he was underwater.
It was really happening, he was going… home.
Normally, he would’ve been excited to return home, finally after so long here in Askr. The fighting was done, he could go home.
But it didn’t feel like home anymore, not when Julius wasn’t there. Morgan wanted nothing more than to be with him.
But Julius didn’t, the mage sniffled, holding back another wave of tears.
He was snapped out of his thoughts when someone bumped into him from behind, it was a young boy with blonde hair and bright emerald green eyes. “I didn’t see you there!” Dew exclaimed, holding both his hands up in innocence, “sorry bout that!”
“Say… Did you know I could easily steal anything just by bumping into you?” Dew suddenly asked with a playful tone to his voice and winked at Morgan, “Make sure to check your pockets just in case!” He broke into a nervous laugh, “Just kidding, of course!”
Before Morgan could open his mouth to say anything, the thief had already spun on his heel, “anyways, I’ve gotta get going!” He waved behind him as he quickly disappeared into the crowd, “Byeeee!”
Morgan blinked a few times, confused with the whole situation before continuing on his way through the summoning gate. He couldn’t help but make one last look around the area, holding onto the last sliver of hope that maybe, just maybe Julius would be there.
He’s not here…
Morgan blinked out a few tears, turning towards the gate, swirling with energy revealing the grassy field of Ylisse.
No last goodbye huh…
Guess I really did mean nothing to him, Morgan thought with as his heart seemed to break a little more, tears flowed uncontrollably as he stepped through the portal. He inhaled deeply, the familiar air entering his lungs. He was really… home.
He’d only gotten so far when Dew’s words suddenly bursted into his mind, it was as if his mind found the whole interaction suspicious to begin with and was just now bringing it up. “Make sure to check your pockets just in case!”
My pocket? Morgan wondered, his hand quickly dug into his pocket, his heart thumping loudly in his chest. His hand felt paper crumple and he immediately pulled it out, had Dew slipped it in during their short interaction?
It’s a letter from Jules… Morgan’s heart fluttered as he automatically recognized his lover’s handwriting. His deep purple eyes scanned through the letter, words confessing Julius’s fears and his reason for pushing Morgan away, Jules… Morgan choked on a sob as he gripped the paper tighter, why are you only telling me this now? Morgan’s heart nearly leaped out of his chest as he read the last lines in the letter.
I treasured every moment we spent together, my love. You meant everything to me, so please, leave me behind and live a better future, away from the dangers I could possibly drag you into.
I could not bear to say goodbye, until the very end.
Morgan whirled around fast enough to nearly give himself whiplash.
He was there.
Standing on the other side of the gate, as elegant as always, it was Julius. The prince wore a smile, his eyes filled with the same love he always conveyed, barely containing the tears forming in his eyes.
The portal connecting them was already beginning to close, its edges slowly inching closer in on itself.
“Jules!!” Morgan cried, his feet shooting him forward as he broke into a desperate sprint. Julius’s tears flowed freely from his eyes, his lips opened in a wide smile, one of his hands reached to clutch his chest as he started to speak.
Morgan’s hand reached out futility as the portal was swallowed up in front of him, his eyes widened and he cried out in despair. Julius’s last words reached his ears, so full of love and regret.
“Goodbye, my love.”
