The Roman Catholic Church of the St. Jean Baptiste Parish was built in 1907, in Morinville, Alberta. On June 30 2021, the church was completely destroyed by a suspicious fire, still under investigation. According to the Edmonton Journal: “Investigators continue to probe the cause of a fire that left a century-old Catholic church in Morinville in ruins. On Thursday afternoon, (when my photos of the burnt church were taken) fire investigators and RCMP were still on scene. No suspects had been identified and the cause of the fire had not been determined. The church is one of several Catholic churches in Canada to burn amid the ongoing discoveries of hundreds of unmarked graves at the sites of former residential schools. Ten years ago I spent the summer with a friend day tripping around central and east Alberta. We visited Morinville. The church was beautiful. There was a wedding. We listened to the bells chime. Here are some photos I took back then.

I knew little to nothing about residential schools at that time. I know better now. From a media release sent earlier this afternoon, the Alberta government announced it will double funding for the Alberta Security Infrastructure Program, from $1 million to $2 million annually, to help protect churches and other targets of hateful vandalism and violence. Premier Kenney has also instructed Justice Minister Kaycee Madu to work with ALERT and police chiefs across the province immediately to step up monitoring and protection of potential target sites. What I don't see is condemnation of residential schools and the roles of the Catholic Church and government, as quickly as the condemnations of vandalism and/or arson. And how about condemnations of the ongoing and escalating strings of attacks against visibly Muslim women? And taking real action to keep them safe?
