Karamajong people - what a stylish and interesting tribe! The Karamajong live in the northern part of Uganda widely spread around Moroto. They live a very traditional live, being mostly cattle herders. People are usually dressed very colorful with a blanket, hat and bracelets/necklaces. One can see the men sitting around on a tiny wooden chair which everyone seems to carry as a standard Karamajong artifact as well as a stick that is often used to beat the cattle. At the age of 18 many Karamajong have to pass a rather painful ritual...there foreheads are being burned with hot metal on several spots to create an impressive tribal pattern that makes people look even more unique. Furthermore at young age the two middle adjacent teeth are removed. This remained as a tradition after the tribe suffered often from tetanus back in the days - as tetanus is locking the jar, the hole created by removing the teeth offered a possibility to give a herbal medicine into the patients mouths. The Karamajong we met are mostly very curious and open for a conversation, although communication is very difficult as most of the people speak only Ngkaramajong - their local language.
