Question about YouTuber Nicky: does he read historical novels? If yes, what happens when he comes across really obvious "the author did not do research even on Wikipedia" "was the editor sleeping on the job" historical blunders? (Like potatoes in Medieval Ireland or tomatoes in the Roman empire)
Hiiii, Iâm getting so slow at answering asks, sorry it took so longđ„°
Nicky loves history and historical novels. To be honest, I think he would read both the trashy novels with historical inaccuracies and books that seriously dive in a certain historical period. when he reviews books he tries to alternate between light reads and heavier themes. I imagine him reviewing a terrible book about ancient Rome, reading at loud the worst part as Yusuf laughs hysterically in the background (âJoe, the main character still has to bone the consul. This is nothing.â) Heâs never offensive to the author, but he does point out the inaccuracies. (âDo you think we should research what they used as lube in this period?â âI know they didnât use thatâ)
Nicky did not study history in this AU, so he also uses those books as an excuse to do research. Him and Joe research topics like the history of tomatoes or âWhat was considered edgy clothes in Victorian Londonâ as a way to âelevateâ the most stupid reviews. But they definitely make videos where Nicky loses it because a âseriousâ novel (a novel that is supposed to be written well by an author with a huge reach) is clearly just... cultural appropriation and 0 research. He has no kindness for those kinds of books. do i have examples in mind? Yes i have
In these videos Joe is more active than in cooking videos, he is better than Nicky at articulating why a certain aspect of a book works or not. (Also, sometimes itâs not really Nickyâs place to always talk about certain issues.) Finally, Joe has the best reading voice, when they talk about poetry he is the one who reads, with Nicky dying and saying things like: âOh, itâs better when you read it.â âRead another one, just one more.â âI just love your voice. You read better than me.â
