The blond's responding chuckle was almost more of a cough. Still, he grinned easily as he tamped out the end of a cigarette in the ashtray between them, already pulling another from a pocket somewhere in the depths of his heavy coat. This pub was definitely not the nicest or, well... safest looking place he'd ever waited out a storm, but Rocinante could think of worse places to be. And places like this were always better with company; he wasn't sure the other counted him as a friend yet, but this conversation and its starting point - one of several shitty lighters that collected in his coat pockets, this one standard enlistee issue - made him realise that the two of them might have a bit in common.
" Oh no, I really was a terrible marine - they'd never say it where they could be overheard, but I'm sure most of my superiors were probably glad to be rid of me, when they did finally put me out to sea. " Another click click click of an uncooperative lighter, a flame that illuminated his face a little more as he took a long drag, " I was always too somethin' - too clumsy, too tall, too curious. I did better when they moved me to covert work, but I still made what I'm sure was an annoying amount of mistakes. "
" well, fuck me. " (moryanki) // *insert stressed boog emoji here*

" Yeah that doesn't look great, "
That much was an understatement, common to the former marine that preferred to downplay the problems he encountered as often as he could manage. Yet here they were, on Rocinante's stupid tiny fishing boat in relatively open sea, watching a storm roll up in their general direction. The clouds looked huge, highlighted against a dark sky on occasion by the lightning that crackled through them. Something like this had the potential to be a major inconvenience if not an outright danger, if they didn't use this little bit of warning they had to prepare for it.
The blond scowled out at the weather, cigarette gripped securely in his teeth as he elected to momentarily abandon the crutch he'd been leaning on in favour of dealing with sails and ropes. He planted his feet, double-wrapping the main line of the vessel's singular sail around a long arm. Between the two of them, they should be able to manage the sail and the rudder even if this got nastier than it looked - he hoped so anyway. Still...
" Hey uh... not that I'm expectin' anything specific but... " his voice was still relatively calm, even as he tied a sturdy rope between himself and the centre mast, " You're not a devil fruit eater, are you ? Can ya swim ? "
“ why are you awake? “ (moryanki)

The spirit froze when the other spoke, remaining eye reflecting dimly in the glow of the safety lights that dotted the hallways of the vessel. Though he couldn't really see himself, he supposed he may look a little out of place - a tiny shadow lingering in the thresholds of doors in the silence of the early morning hours.
People weren't often awake and roaming the halls at this hour - between this and the ship's sheer size, there was usually a decent chance of not startling anyone if he steered clear of the path most of the others used to get to the kitchen. And their captain was usually so sleepy - Eden sometimes expected to see them least of all.
" Ah sorry, I always am - did I wake you? "
"You really need to work on your combat skills. I can't keep playing nursemaid." (moryanki)

" I'm sorry. "
The comment, though a tiny rasp on breathless lungs, was genuine. He sat curled in on himself, arms wrapped around bent knees to make himself as small as possible as the captain did their best to be gentle with the wound along his shoulder and back, dabbing at the sluggish, dark blood that collected at its edges. Everything else he'd managed to wrap or suture already, the back was just difficult from a reach standpoint - even more-so without sight.
" I wouldn't have asked, but I can't reach. "
This... wasn't really his idea of a pleasant evening either. Not that he didn't appreciate the help, he deeply did. And what was another scar or two amongst so many? It was having someone look at him so closely that made him extra nervous and quiet. Boog was probably right - even if he did his best to just stay out of the way when a fight broke out, he couldn't count on that when there was field medicine to be done.

“when you yell at me this is who you’re yelling at. that’s me. just remember that.”
@moryanki: ❝ your monkey got into my quarters again. ❞ they look displeased, with one arm outstretched and holding a sopping wet giuseppe by the scruff of his neck. somehow boog managed to pull sweats on while chasing the critter around their bathroom, but sandy brown hair is still dripping, evidence of the captain's rapid scramble out of the shower during the lemur's surprise visit. ❝ you should keep it on a leash. ❞
𝐒𝐇𝐄 𝐋𝐄𝐓 𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐀𝐍 𝐀𝐔𝐃𝐈𝐁𝐋𝐄 𝐆𝐀𝐒𝐏. ❝ you're hurting him! ❞ rushing forward to rescue the sad little animal in boog's grasp. she took him in her arms like a baby, pulling him close to her chest. now that he was safe, marina saw it fit to give the captain a swift kick to the shin.
she then turned her attention to the little lemur in her arms. cooing him as she began to walk away. ❝ are you okay, little baby? they didn't hurt you, did they? ❞ marina stopped again, turning back to boog. ❝ you shouldn't be so mean to him. maybe he was just trying to keep an eye on you? what if you fell asleep under the stream of water and drowned? ❞
@moryanki: "would it help take your mind off things if I told you a story?" ( meme )
𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐀 had pulled her legs close to her chest, her head on her knees. she had been in a lot of sticky situations over the years, and she had always found a way out. she always felt confident enough in herself and her abilities. but her faith was waning a bit. her confidence gone.
she looked up at her captain, as their voice broke the silence. their offer was strange. perhaps it didn't make much sense. they had never really gave the impression of being much of a story teller at the best of times, let alone in such a situation as this. but the offer made her feel better... their plan was working, it would seem..
slowly she nodded, just a slight nod. ❝ okay... sure... ❞
