Tapering the tail As the body of the fish curves and tapers down I can pick up the light again on the left. To accentuate this I’m not only darkening the right side but slightly lightening the background. Junctions While I’m doing all this cutting, which of course is slowing the work down, I’m also taking care of the junctions where the background andamento meets the background outline - doing all the fiddly stuff together so when I lay the background with mostly pre-cut material it will be faster and therefore help me keep a good flow. The effect of the halo-like outline is to move all those angled cuts away from the fish. A fin and some black Putting in the fin I am using some longer thinner cuts to to try and give it that delicate feel. Light and shadow Working back from the head our Kohaku Koi is made of a white body with red pattern. Our light source is coming directly from the top of the picture so in the areas of shadow we will turn our white to blue and our orange to red.
