A morning vision of “old” Hawaii. Or, at least the romantic idealization of “old” Hawaii. This spot is the entrance to a historical Hawaiian fish pond that is now the home to hundreds of eels forever stuck in the pond unable to return to the sea. Fish ponds were common through out the pacific islands. The execution of the fish ponds varied between island cultures. Hawaiians lashed coconut trunks together in a narrow channel that allowed small fish and other sea creatures into the pond. Once there they were relatively safe until the fish grew too large to escape the narrow passages between the coconut tree gates.
