Well, given that ghosts actually exist in this world and she lives in a city full of them, yeah she believes they exist because it’d be baffling not to.

Nope, well at least not one different from everyone else around her.

don’t know, probably neutral good or chaotic neutral. She’s more interested in having fun and creating things right now.

Fic titles: Right Angles, The Last Light of Dusk, and The Rise and Fall of the Planetary Society!

Right Angles: Mosri attempts to flirt and get a girlfriend but seems to keep coming at her teenage romance from the wrong direction. She approaches it like she does most things, as an experiment: she just needs to get the right angle.

The Last Light of Dusk: A story following the Sun Knight Ber of Tand and Grand Architect Rill as they manage to hold off the fire-rain that is destroying the land, saving their people, burying the city and all the knowledge in it. The people saved but the world they had before gone, Rill leaves through the western pass, sealing it as the last rays of sun fade into the eternal twilight.

Thanks to the whole Solar Empire and City of the Sun thing, there’s a whole symbolism thing of the sun representing the city and the lives within it and that the sun setting for the last time on the destroyed city and sealed pass cuts Rill off from the live she led before and everyone she knew.

The Rise and Fall of the Planetary Society: sometime between when the city of the sun was buried and then raised again, a couple of kids from the nearby village end up in the ruins. They find the library and the academic buildings, and a room containing a model of the solar system.

They call themselves the Planetary Society and it follows them as they learn about their magic and the world and navigate their lives as mages in the Sun Desert. It also has a double plot following the lives of some students whose journals and workbooks and things they find. And through it the present mages connect to each other.

There’s also the whole ghosts in the city things and maybe some of them get angry and try doing something about how mages are treated by fighting back with violence that the spirits then have to stop. And also they get older and some of them have to move to different villages. And basically the group disperses or something...

and then the epilogue is some new kids finding evidence of the planetary society and finding the same kind of bonds the previous one had.... and maybe it’s close enough to when the city gets raised again that some of the surviving members return and get to fondly remember.. idk.

OK so since magic is basically electricity in the Star Verse and would fry any electronics and also fucks up magnets and magnetism that technology is kind of out the window for them, but they do have magic based technology but it can’t be too sensitive or it’s like the touch sensitive taps that get turned on when there’s too much static electricity in the air.

So basically, they’re likely going to go down the -punk route of technology. Like, steampunk would be totally cool but I’m thinking like... it’d be more like windpunk or something where things like windmills and waterwheels and turbines are a thing as well as people just like using magic to power devices and move things.

And now that I’ve kind of let my characters usher in an era of peace (aka they’re not going to be busy fighting and killing each other all the time) I’m thinking they’ll (I’ll) finally get to play with that.

And like, I can totally see them doing the whole clockwork and gear thing but I’m pretty sure the concept of burning things to heat water to produce steam to make things move isn’t going to occur to them because they have much easier (less resource intensive and doesn’t require mining or logging) ways to produce energy (like they could just use magic fire to heat the water, they could use magic to create wind etc).

So, yeah, anyway, Mosri and Uren are going to be the two big minds of the century since they’re already established characters who like tinkering with technology.

That I can do. I'm not sure how much I've actually said about how she ended up in my cast of characters in canon, so I guess I'll start there.

She was born somewhere around the time of a solar eclipse which basically meant one of the moons passed between the planet and the sun, casting it into temporary night. (I decided I needed to include a solar eclipse after the one last August that I lived in the path of, especially since the star verse doesn't have lunar eclipses due to the whole part where the planet gives off light and they are illuminated by that. Although there are times when the moons cross each other but that happens regularly and frequently so it's just like a regular thing that happens like we have moon phases).

Well anyway, world goes dark due to solar eclipse, evil goddess and right-hand man show up with their cult of the red tooth, kid who happens to be a one in a million "my body doesn't conduct magic" starless is born. But she just also happens to have had a Painted mother. So when that happens the magic goes wonky.

Baby pops out with literally stony gray skin.

Now this bit is highly visible but also rare enough that it's got loads of superstition surrounding it. Basically all of it bad. Most link it to the corrupted ones (aka the zombies off on their own island) because the empire (where most of the painted descended starless were born) had a habit of sending them to the dark island colony to die/be killed. Anyway thanks to being a non-conductor they're also immune to the magic prion that causes the zombies.

Making things even worse for this baby: the evil goddess' tag team partner is one of the painted starless that was sent to the colony to die and instead survived and is basically the entire fear of the dead coming back.

So the villagers in an effort to appease the stars and the spirits and the shadows and whatever other entity led the two evil gods to their doorstep decided to kill the baby.

They got about as far as the front door (And managed to kill or mostly kill the parents) before our hero of the story shows up, kills the people trying to kill the kid, manages to scare off the evil goddess and god (wanted to kill them but the plot couldn't allow for the final confrontation).

Anyway thanks to becoming a spirit our hero has the protection compulsion (aka your god saw you on the aide of the road and adopted you and everything else because that's how the shadows figured the spirits would actually do their fucking jobs of looking out for their charges) and adopts the baby.

Baby gets named Mosri.

Hero goes "Well my spouse didn't ask before adopting the previous kid so they really can't say shit about this."

Also gets a god-mother in Namri the Mage Killer who is kickass and also technically her grandmother due to having more or less adopted the hero in previous stories.

Mosri ends up being younger than her sister Che by a few months (I don't have my notes so not sure how many but i wanna say like three?). Then there is their brother Bi (biitka) who is like three? years older. Then sister Raln who is 5-6, and Svend (zfent bc no voicing distinction) who is... I'm not sure... i think 12?

There is also Nes who is 9? And Sen who is... ??? somewhere around there... who are technically like cousins but given the number of adopted kids and being raised by everyone involved they're basically all siblings.

There is also Del and Di and Fel and Lef who are younger cousins/siblings that happen later and my notes have the ages for.

Oh and also Pirre who is 14-15??? And their cousin. Also adopted.

Aka Mosri happened bc I saw a solar eclipse and she provided a place for me to bring in more senior spirits to explain that becoming a god in the star verse essentially makes you a brooding chicken before the full powers and responsibilities kick in. Also some interplay of magic and genetics.

Bloop for the Tea Lady and the girl who made the flying machine (I cannot remember her name)

The Tea Lady lives in a mountain valley surrounded by mists because mist/fog is something that creates a kind of liminal space and allows spirits to travel between the magic cloud and the mortal world and just move about.

Mosri is the girl who invents the flying machine. Due to being a starless, the painted magic stuff kind of went wonky with her and that’s why she has gray skin that’s hard like stone.

Yes I can. I saved this to draw up diagrams and stuff but yeah, that’s gonna take too long. So here’s the basic rundown.

She’s the first to make a reliable flying machine that can actually fly as opposed to something like a parasail or parachute that just catches the air and when used with magic to control the wind can be kind of like a hot air balloon or dirigible in terms of appearance and how it flies (it’s not lighter than air, it just kind of is wind based and shaped the same). Mosri’s are the glider and airplane type flying machine that can fly without the use of magic.

So, she is standing on the shoulders of giants so to speak. People already have some basic grasp on how to make things fly through the air with sufficient wind. She then takes the knowledge of that, her own mechanical knowledge, and then whatever information she can find in the library to build and test her own machines.

Thanks to magical healing (it’s less effective and harder to do on her thanks to her body not conducting magic) she can get those broken bones and such healed up quickly.

But yeah, her flying machines are probably going to start out looking a lot like Otto Lilienthal’s

OOo you picked the good questions.

15. is any part of your book inspired by fairytales?

uh. no? I mean I can’t think of anything right off the bat. Although like, Morose Aille of the Seven Thrones, Kedre de Aie of the Rosewood, and Queen Theline were all kind of inspired by the feel of fairy tales but not anything particular.

19. do any of your characters fly? how?

Yes. Well, there are the birds who can fly. Obviously the reason they can is that they’re birds.

The two other characters who can fly are from my Icarus Retelling: Dreams of Flight. Yere can by a combination of wind magic and sails. It’s very very experimental and not safe at all. Mosri flies via technology and makes a glider (engine will come later).

21. are there any important animals in the book? any pets? do animals talk?

Oh yes, lots of important animals.

There are Fren and his firebirds. They’re also pretty significant symbolism wise.

There’s also fish. Ri likes fish and has a fishpond. They also play a big part in symbolism although not in relation to Ri.

Klim Tog has sheep. The Green Dragon has gators. The Tea Lady has snakes and turtles and a variety of other animal spirits that make their way to her valley in between dying and being reincarnated.

Pirre has sheep and goats. Also a dog named Parsnip. Tali then gets a dog (Potato). Bos has cows. Yinn has two cats. Qiv has a bunch of grassmounts (dinosaurs!)

Guri has Yarr (maybe a dog, maybe a bear, never actually specified).

Pik and Kiis have goats. Teun has a bunch of dogs. Teun is also part of the three wolves with their triplets Te and Tela. Oslen has deer theme. Kalr and Afa both have falcons, although Kalr of the Est has an eagle themed name. Deffen of the Blue Wings/Gull has a motif of the blue-winged seagull.

Lell I guess also has fish but more in that she just liked fishing.

And… that’s all that’s coming to mind right now. I’m pretty sure I’m forgetting somebody but yeah.

Ok since I have 170+ ocs I’m just gonna do Yere and Mosri who are the stars of my Icarus retellings.

Yere

She has Bipolar Disorder Type 1

She is the inventor of the sail-kite

Her second name is Longwind, given by her sister after she leaves and travels far from her sister and the sea.

She is Yinn’s older sister by about two years

She had three kids. Tali, Dellar, and Cendi

Mosri

She is adopted

Her name is Southern, so it tends to get shortened to Mos where she lives now because most names in the Sun Desert are only one syllable.

She is a star-less which means her body doesn’t conduct magic and she can neither sense nor use it.

Since she was born to a Painted, the magic there interacted weirdly with her body, turning it to a stony gray color and also making it tough.

She’s an inventor.

If your OC could have any superpower, which would it be and why?

Uh, well, Yere already has magic. She’s really good at controlling the wind. Which came in handy when she decided to try her hand at flying.

Mosri is actually the opposite and one of the few people who actually can’t use magic no matter how much she studies or tries. (Which in the world that has technology based around the ability to use magic, does actually end up being a disability since “magic” isn’t a “superpower” as they view things.) Anyway, one thing she’d love to be able to do is fly because she just sees so much freedom being able to chase the wind and watch birds fly or just race across the sand on sailcarts.

Underwrite. I always go through in Rough Draft 2.0 and it’s basically filling everything out. My initial draft can basically be described as an outline it’s so underwritten lmao. But I’ve gotten better about it.
