i’m so interested in hearing takes about race and hannibal because, for a show about murder (both illegal and legal), the show seems to shy away from any kind of consistent politics surrounding race. i think the closest we get to an answer is in the muralist arc in season 2.

in season 2, the muralist kills people of many different races for aesthetic, apolitical reasons. like the show itself, the muralist seems to be interested in the aesthetic appeal of murder without examining the optics.

hannibal lecter, who the show encourages the audience to identify with, says about the muralist: “The color of our skin is so often politicized, it would almost be refreshing to see someone revel in the aesthetic for aesthetic's sake.” he even tells the muralist himself, “I love your work.” it feels like the show itself is encouraging us to look past the racial politics and merely examine through an aesthetic lens.

however, the muralist’s attempt at post-racialism, just like the show’s own, fails—one of the most horrifying scenes in season 2 is a Black man running from a white killer through a cornfield at night, which feels resonant with narratives concerning fugitive slaves.

are the racialized optics in this scene intentional? are we supposed to be horrified not only by the muralist’s violence but the racialized aspect of his violence? is hannibal lecter implicated in this racialized violence because of his voiced approval of the aesthetics?
