Forty ancient tombs were excavated along the Mosul Dam reservoir after the graves were exposed by extremely low water levels.
I'm a bit surprised there wasn't any rescue archaeology done on these prior to the dam's building, but I guess Iraq hasn't always been a great place for safe archaeology.

There were around 100 passengers on board, heading to a tourist island and most could not swim, additionally, authorities had reportedly warned people about rising water levels as the gates of the Mosul dam had been opened, and people are reportedly accusing the ship operator of ignoring the advice.
Regardless of who is at fault, this is a needless loss of life. RIP.
Dam catastrophe could cause $40 billion in economic damages and huge loss of life.
"A rupture of the 370-foot-high structure would put 4 million people at risk by sending floodwaters racing more than 200 miles downstream as far as the capital of Baghdad, engulfing villages, destroying farms and causing up to $20 billion in economic damages, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers estimates.”

Turkey’s President Recep Erdogan has issued the order to begin filling the Ilisu Dam. This dam will withhold the waters of the Tigris River. Experts estimate it will take two to three years to fill the lake behind the dam.

It’s one of the ironies of Iraq’s political situation that the dam’s turbines still provide electricity to Mosul, which is now under isis control; intelligence reports indicate that isis has earned millions of dollars by taxing the electricity. After the peshmerga captured the dam two years ago, Kurdish officials intended to shut down the turbines, but American officials told them that this would add more water to the reservoir, making the dam more likely to burst. So isis continued to profit from the dam. “We wanted to strangle them, but we weren’t allowed,” a Kurdish official told me.
