You noticed Robert Rosenthal because everyone noticed Robert Rosenthal.

It wasn’t even about looks, though that didn’t hurt. It was the way he moved through the airbase like he belonged there. Like the noise and smoke and tension bent around him instead of pressing in. He laughed easily. Clapped shoulders. Knew everyone’s name within a day.

You’d been stationed there barely a week when you first saw him charm the socks off three mechanics and a supply officer in under five minutes.

“Does he always talk that much?” you asked the nurse beside you.

She snorted. “That’s Rosie.”

“Oh,” you said knowingly, as if that explained everything.

It did not.

The first time he introduced himself to you, it felt exactly like how he introduced himself to everyone else.

“Robert Rosenthal,” he said, offering his hand. “But Rosie, if you’re feeling generous.”

You shifted the files in your arms and shook his hand politely.

“I’m not,” you replied. “I’m actually feeling less than at the moment.”

He blinked.

Then grinned.

“Well,” he said. “I admire honesty.”

You nodded, satisfied you’d handled that well, and stepped around him to continue toward operations.

He watched you go with an expression you didn’t bother to interpret.

The thing about Rosie was that he was constantly around.

But so was everyone.

It was a base. People milled. Paths crossed. Doors were held open. It wasn’t strange that he kept appearing wherever you were.

You were in the mess hall one afternoon when he slid onto the bench across from you, tray in hand.

“Mind if I join you?”

You gestured vaguely. “It’s a free country.”

“Debatable,” he murmured, but you were already unfolding your napkin.

He asked about your hometown. About how long you’d been stationed there. About whether you preferred tea or coffee in the mornings.

“Coffee,” you said absently. “Strong. None of that watery excuse they serve here.”

He smiled at you like you’d just handed him a secret.

You assumed he smiled at everyone like that.

The next morning there was a mug on your desk.

Dark coffee. Still steaming.

You glanced around the room.

“Is this yours?” you asked the clerk nearby.

He choked on absolutely nothing. Were you really that oblivious?

“Nope.”

You looked down at the mug again.

“Well,” you said thoughtfully, “that’s odd.”

You drank it anyway.

Across the room, Rosie watched you take the first sip and tried very hard not to look too pleased with himself.

You didn’t see him.

Rosie started walking you to places.

Not intentionally. It just happened.

You’d leave a building and there he’d be, falling into step beside you like it was coincidence.

“You headed to medical?” he’d ask.

“Yes.”

“Perfect. I was going that way.”

He never was.

But you had no way of knowing that.

One afternoon, wind whipped hard across the tarmac and sent your stack of papers scattering. Before you could even curse properly, he was crouching beside you, gathering them carefully.

“Hazardous duty,” he said gravely.

“Paperwork?” you asked.

“Being this close,” he replied.

You paused.

Then you frowned slightly, scanning your surroundings.

“Is someone behind me?”

He stared at you.

“What?”

“You said ‘being this close’ like —” You gestured vaguely. “Like there’s something back there.”

His mouth opened.

Closed.

Then he huffed out a quiet laugh and handed you the last sheet.

“You’re incredible,” he muttered.

“Thank you,” you said politely.

That was not what he meant.

Then, the other pilots had started noticing.

They’d nudge him when you walked past. Raise brows. Whisper things that made him roll his eyes.

You, however, had a completely different theory.

“You’re very popular,” you told him one afternoon as the two of you stood near a jeep.

“Am I?”

“Oh yes. Everyone likes you.”

He leaned casually against the hood. “You included?”

You considered this.

“I think you’re very friendly.”

His expression did something complicated.

“Friendly,” he repeated.

“Yes. To everyone.”

There was a long pause.

“I don’t think I am,” he said carefully.

You waved that off. “You are. I’ve seen you.”

He studied you like you were a puzzle missing several critical pieces.

Harry Crosby had mentioned something to you in passing.

“You and Rosie are quite close.”

“Who?” You had replied absentmindedly.

Harry stared at you, then said, “Rosie. You know, the pilot?”

“Oh.” You said, “Lieutenant Rosenthal. We’re friends, yes.”

Harry sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose.

Rosie escalated after this.

You just… didn’t notice.

He brought you a pastry from town after you’d mentioned missing real bakeries. You gasped, delighted.

“That’s so sweet of you!” you said. “You’re always doing nice things like this for people.”

“For people,” he echoed.

“Yes! The radio boy said you helped him fix his headset. And I heard you stayed up half the night helping Johnson with engine reports.”

He exhaled slowly.

“I did.”

“You’re just naturally thoughtful,” you concluded warmly.

He stared at you like you’d just missed the point on purpose.

The breaking point came on a bright afternoon near the runway.

You were squinting at a clipboard when he stepped directly into your path.

“Can I ask you something?” he said.

“Of course.”

“Hypothetically,” he began, “if a man went out of his way to see you every day. Brought you coffee. Walked you to your posts. Remembered small things you said in passing. What would you think?”

You didn’t even hesitate.

“That he’s very considerate.”

His jaw tightened slightly.

“And if that same man,” he continued patiently, “looked at you like you were the only person in the room?”

You glanced around instinctively again.

“Is this about someone? If it’s Vera from the donut stand, I can set you two up.”

He closed his eyes briefly.

When he opened them, he stepped closer.

“This is about me.”

You blinked.

“I’m really not following.”

He leaned in just slightly, voice dropping.

“I am not like this with everyone.”

You tilted your head.

“You aren’t?”

“No.”

“I’ve literally watched you be like this with everyone.”

“I have not brought everyone pastries at dawn.”

“Well, no, but—”

“And I don’t walk everyone back to their quarters.”

“You walk with lots of people. You walked with Vera—“

“Once, she was lost. Anyway, I don’t care about her. I walk with you.”

You stared at him.

Really stared.

He didn’t look amused now. Or playful. Or teasing.

He looked… intent.

“You’re serious,” you said slowly.

“I have been serious,” he replied, just as slow, “since the first day you refused to call me Rosie.”

Your mouth fell open a fraction.

“Oh.”

He waited.

You replayed weeks in your head. The coffee. The timing. The way he was always there. The way he looked at you when you spoke.

“Oh,” you said again, softer.

His shoulders relaxed like he’d been holding tension for days.

“You didn’t know,” he murmured.

“I thought you were just—” You gestured helplessly. “You.”

“I am just me,” he said. “But I’m me differently with you.”

Silence stretched between you, charged and fragile.

“You’re telling me,” you said carefully, “that all of this was flirting?”

“All of it.”

“Even the paper hazard thing?”

“Especially that.”

You pressed your lips together, fighting a smile.

“Well,” you admitted, “you might need to be a little clearer next time.”

He laughed, warm and helpless.

“Clearer?”

“Yes. I am apparently not very good at picking up hints.”

He stepped closer, close enough that you could feel the warmth of him in the breeze.

“Then let me be clear,” he said softly. “I like you. Not in a friendly-to-everyone way. Not in a polite way. In a very specific, very intentional way.”

Your heart did something strange in your chest.

“Oh,” you breathed for the third time that day.

From somewhere behind him, one of the pilots groaned loudly. “It only took her a month!”

Rosie didn’t look away from you.

“Worth it,” he said quietly.
