There was something peaceful about Ambrose, at night. The quiet stillness of it, as if the town itself was sleeping and it brought a sense of comfort to me. The new people had brought life back into the small town, some of them were actively fixing up the other buildings, creating lives and purpose for themselves.
I wondered how the brothers felt about it, I could tell they were like me, not used to people. People outside of yourself were always a threat, always something to keep an eye on. Being alone, it was easier, you could let your guard down, be yourself.
I questioned my choice many times to stay here, but right now, this walk in Ambrose made me feel as if it was the right one. I gazed up at the dark cloudless sky as I took a breath in. Night time was always so much better for me. The humid heat of the night wrapped around my skin as I made my way back to the Sinclair house. The only sound to meet my ears was the bull frogs croaking as I walked, my eyes on my worn shoes as I made my way to the side of the house.
"Quit your damn croaking!" Came a shout from the front of the house, followed by a string of muttered curses.
'Bo hates those amphibians.' I thought to myself with a snort, a grin on my face.
I stilled, the croaking continued as I heard the door slam, footsteps retreating into the house. My grin vanished, my lips pulling to one side as I looked up at the house, staring into the wall as if I could see inside.
Since when did I call him Bo? I shouldn't have that level of familiarity towards him.
My stomach twisted as my hands balled into fists in my pockets. Since when did I laugh? It was a human thing to do. I wasn't allowed to do that. I shouldn't do that. I am a monster, not a human.
Memories sprang into my mind as if my inner thoughts were wanting to torture me. Faces, pain, the emotions tied to the memory, the feeling of my skin on fire, the smell of blood invading my nose.
I shook my head sharply, my neck feeling stiff as I took hurried steps to the side door of the house. Mistake. Coming here was a mistake. Accepting the contracts, being helpful, being around them was all a mistake.
My hand gripped the knob, my knuckles white as I sneered at the sight.
Why now?
I pulled the door, mindful to not yank it off the wall. I didn't want to have to fix it, or worse, hear him yell. I didn't want to be yell at, or worse-
I stepped inside, shutting my thoughts down as I bit into my tongue, the taste of copper making me shiver, I eyed the room in front of me as I closed the door behind me a bit too harshly as I heard the window pane rattle. I kept my head down, walking a straight path to my space, my eyes focused on the floor. My hands shook, my chest thundered. I bumped into something as I heard him speak.
"Whoa there, Moth, hey you alright?"
I jerk my head down and away, my stomach tightening even more.
"Fine!" I bit out too harshly, I can hear the rasp in my voice as I move past him, my hand on the door knob as I yank it open and all but throw myself into the room.
My fingers trace the knob behind me, before I turn the lock, the click allowing me to lower my shoulders.
I breathe, in and out, slowly, listening to my heart while ignoring the itch in my veins.
The dark is quiet, calming, safe, as I sink to the floor. I can't even see in front of me, my hand held out as I relax further, letting the heat from my stomach travel everywhere.
I am no longer her, I am simply it, some other form that wasn't gendered, wasn't human. The other side of myself I vowed to let no human see, unless they were destined to die.
My heart had slowed, my fingers trembling less as I focused on the pillows under me, the blankets as I curled into a ball.
I was safe. No one had saw. I was safe here. Safe in the dark, hidden away.
Her face floated in my mind, a mirror of my human form, but her eyes were kinder, her spirit a fire that refused to extinguish.
I felt the well of tears as I buried my head into the pillow.
Can't think of her right now.
A knock on the door startled me, my head turning to it.
"You alright in there, kid?"
His voice held a small amount of concern.
I took a breath, focusing.
"Fine. Just need some time to myself." I manage to say, my voice human enough as I watch where the door would be.
"Alright. Well there's a plate in the fridge for ya, Vin cooked us all dinner."
"Thank you, M- Bo."
I froze. My eyes wide as I expected the door to slam open, to receive anger, hatred.
Instead, I heard his footsteps fade. I waited, moving to the door as I pressed the side of my face to it, feeling.
He had left, gone to the other side of the house.
I looked at the door, before I stood, my body feeling itchy before I turned the handle, stepping out in my human form.
I walked quietly to the kitchen, retrieving the food. I paused as I shut the fridge door, the plate in my hand as I eyed the masked figure in the doorway.
"Hi Moth."
"Brahms." I nod back.
He has an empty plate in his hands as he walked to the sink.
I step towards the doorway, my eyes on the floor.
"Hey, Moth?"
His voice was quiet, a bit high pitched.
I turned, casting him a glance.
"Thank you again, for the doll. It really is important to me."
I stared at him my eyes not quite reaching his masked face, my throat aching as I swallow. I nod sharply. "If you ever need help, just ask," I gestured vaguely, "you know the rules now."
"I like rules." He said. He approached me, his figure so much taller then mine as he paused, his head tilting slightly. "Good Night, Moth." He said, leaving the kitchen.
"Good night, Brahms." I whispered back.
Darkness ~ a snapshot in Moth's new life.
I stretched my arms up, my spine making a delightful popping noise as I sighed. I had spent nearly a week in this new place, Ambrose. It was a small dead town, in the middle of nowhere, some state called Louisana. I had been in this state before, I kept to the lower half of the country, the heat was pleasant. The sun beat down on the town, a stale smell lingering in the air except for the smell of death, it was strongest by the museum, and I had yet to approach it.
There wasn't much to do here in Ambrose, not that I minded. I liked the fact there weren't many people. I had learned very early in life that people and myself did not mix, no matter my efforts. I vainly kept trying though, a stubborn streak ran a mile long in me, at least that what I had been told, a long time ago.
I glanced at the clock on the wall, it apparently was the cap to a beer bottle, the item making my lips curve up as I tucked a strand of my hair away, noting the time before I entered the main area of the shop, my Boss was bent over inside the engine bay, a string of muttered grunts and cusses.
"Excuse me?" I asked as I waited near the door.
He banged his head on the hood, swearing as he glared at me. His blue eyes were sharp, angry, and cautious. He lifted his cap, wiping the sweat off of his brow.
"My apologies, I am informing you of my dismissal." I kept my gaze steady as he let out a breath.
He eyed the watch on his wrist before he nodded. "Go on then."
I turned on my heel, leaving the shop, stepping out into the humid heat.
~~~
We had come to an agreement when I first arrived. A flyer on a bus stop along a dirt road had gotten my attention, I had never heard of the town before, but it wasn't too far from where I was at the moment. It was simply a day's walk after I tore the flyer down before I showed up in the town, his blue eyes looking me over.
I would work for him and in turn, I would have a place to stay. He wasn't happy at first, arguing that he needed to know what form of payment I wanted.
"Stones." I adjusted the small backpack on my shoulder, the few items I had gathered in my life weighed down the bag as it bit into my shoulder. My hair stuck to the nape of my neck, but I felt alive, my eyes studying the human in front of me as he sized me up, I knew the lack of sweat on my unnaturally pale skin under a southern sun raised suspicion.
"Stones? You're going to do all the work I ask of you for some stones?" He laughed, but I couldn't understand his amusement.
"Yes. There are things more valuable than your human paper money." I said honestly, my eyes meeting his before I darted my gaze away.
"Human, huh? You one of those goth chicks?" He smirked, before he spat off to the side.
"No," I took a breath, "I accept payments of a deeper nature. Stones that catch your eye, bones you find, trinkets. Things that speak to you."
"And for that, all I have to do is house and feed ya?" His voice betrayed his look of disinterest.
I nodded, my fingers twitching at the bargain brewing as I wiped them on my torn jeans. "Yes. A dark place, to be left alone, to rest. And a meal a day, human food. For that I will work for you, whatever you need."
"Hot damn. You know I worried 'bout that advertisement bringin' on kooks, but you're alright, kid." He shrugged a shoulder, as I stepped forward, pulling my hand away from my pants as I held it out to him.
"Do you agree to the terms?" I asked him, a hot wind blowing around us.
His hand stuck out, a grin on his face. I reached for it, my hand slipping into his, a shiver going down my spine.
A new contract.
~~~
He had taken me to his home, I had politely offered to house somewhere else but he waved a hand, grumbling about some man in the walls. He had lead me to a cupboard under the stairs. He pulled on the chain the bare bulb flickering.
I eyed it, the few boxes inside. I nodded as he started moving the boxes out. "Think there's a twin mattress we could put in here. Get ya some blankets. You sure that's all ya need?"
"Yes, thank you for your hospitality." I said as I stepped into the small room. It needed some things, but it felt safe.
"This good enough? You said small and dark." He spared me a glance, I knew he had questions, but he was smart enough to not ask them, yet.
I nodded again before I reached up, unscrewing the bulb, plunging the room into darkness. A smile he couldn't see appeared over my face.
"Perfect."
