Hi Curlicue! I found this HUGE bug on the way back from work, just chilling on a tree trunk right next to a suuuuper busy footpath. Any idea what it is? It was about as long as my hand!

whaaaat is that. I really wish I could see more detail on the head; it looks like a couple different things mashed together.
Okay, having now consulted with 9 other entomologists, the consensus is mayyybe a just-molted cicada (the wings are rlly odd for a cicada tho, and the abdomen is a bit extended), but perhaps more likely some sort of moth, such as Cossidae, which are large and are somewhat cicada-like in body shape. The wings still look pretty short to me, but maybe if they were extended out towards the side that is an illusion of the camera angle.
Our other consensus is that you should take more pictures.
