“That’s rather true. It’s a sort of hell-ish place. I went to google gooseberry jam recipes and I was hounded by all these little pop ups talking about women in my area that want to meet me.”
“Are you on Instagram? You should like my page. I post my gardening photos.”

“No, Mother, I’m not on Instagram. You won’t find me on any form of social media that involves over edited snapshots of my life. Actually, better just make that any form of social media.”
Watson had joked once about setting up an Instagram account for Clyde, but the withering look he’d sent her from across the breakfast table was enough to let her know what he thought of that idea.
Sherlock paused, glancing up at her and raising an eyebrow.
“You didn’t click on any of these said pop ups, did you?”

“I suppose that’s fair. In my defence I wouldn’t have thought a blind date would be so treacherous. One of the women in my book club met her current partner like that and she didn’t have any trouble at all.”
“Perhaps I’m just past my sell by date.”
“No, I don’t think so. I see plenty of older women finding new love, though I will admit that a lot of them are rather questionable - be it in their personalities, or in exactly how they found themselves without their previous husband. I think that you are simply looking in the wrong place. ‘Blind dates’ sound foolish; go to some proper social events instead.”
“Peace, quiet and you. I don’t need too much else.”
Just Some Fluff Starters
It would have been so easy for Mycroft to dismiss his mother’s words. A little bit of softness was not something that he tended to react well too. He was so used to a cold existence that when a little warmth was provided for him, he was naturally suspicious of it. For once, though, he had the common sense to hesitate before he responded with a disbelieving comment - biting back his natural pessimism in favour of, just for a moment, making his mother happy instead.
“I love you too, Mummy,” Mycroft said, and he honestly meant too. Yes, he grumbled and complained, and he admittedly knew that he was not the best son in the world, but he did love her. He always would.

“That doesn’t give you an excuse to adopt all of your father’s traits, Mycroft.”
“You’re more than welcome to adopt some of my softer demeanour, you know.”
“And where exactly if your soft demeanour supposed to get me in life, hm?”

“Oh good lord - Any sentence that starts like that can’t end well. What did you do? If it’s something to do with your father, I don’t want to hear it.”
“I, ah... Well, alright then. Give me a moment to decide upon a change a subject.”

“Oh, yes - Yes, apologies, I’m here wittering on and you’re sitting there, starving. I’ll just grab my purse.”
“Where would you like to go?”
“Chips?” Really, should any other response be expected from John? When it came to his eating habits - as well as any other kind of habits, actually - he tended to latch onto one thing and not deviate from it. Chips, it seemed, were his food of choice (coffee, meanwhile, was his drink).
That wasn’t to say that he wouldn’t eat other things, mind you. “Or somewhere expensive? I could treat you, yeah? Got lots of money, me. May as well spend some of it on a lovely lady.”
