When Elissar from the 2016 Infestation became a kitten, did another mothlion was created to occupate their place?

Yes! After Ellisar lost his Mothlion status, his power was returned to Sage, who passed it onto another cat. 

They exist and I have an idea of what I want to do with them, but I haven’t had the chance to design them yet. :)

In one of the asks it was said that we only know 2 mothlions, but wasn't Ellisar from the Infestation event a mothlion too?

Ellisar was a Mothlion, but after using all of his power to destroy the infestation bugs, it appears there’s no magic left in him. No one knows where he is nowadays, but he’s definitely no longer a Mothlion (or Kitten for that matter). Is he even a Mothcat any longer? 

No one knows. :~)

Who are the mothlions already presented to the group? Can we know anything about their backstories? Or what are their blessings?

There are currently two Mothlions revealed to the group (out of nine) and one still being designed (due to my lack of ability, whoops - he was hinted at during the Ocean Wars event). 

The backstories behind them are all super detailed and being developed, so I can’t answer it in one sitting here. I will work on releasing that content ASAP! … I had all of this planned in a notebook before I moved, but that notebook may or may not have gotten lost in the shuffle since then.

To answer the question: 

Sage, the progenitor of the species. He is basically The Mothlion, being the oldest, largest, most powerful one of all. His element is “creation” or “life”. His duty is to protect all Mothcats because he is the ‘father’ of them all. He’s the only one who can make other Mothlions. His active blessing looks like this.  His dormant blessing’s location is a secret from everyone because he’s embarrassed by it. (And no, it’s not his private parts because SOME admins had to suggest that as a joke.)

Tao Yuan is the Mothlion of the East. His element is fire, and the flames on his body can be controlled at his will to burn his enemies or warm his friends. His blessing is located on the chest area near his heart, where his passion burns the strongest. He guards the sacred peach orchard located in the heart of the Far East. The peaches that grow from his antlers are said to grant immortality. 

The rest are yet to be revealed!
