Happiness hits you between moments of blind panic and crushing defeat, between moments of heart wrenching loss and bone deep laughter. It hits you the moment the sun wraps you up in its arms and finally tells the darkness, “she’s had enough now, darling.” Happiness is swimming in the folds of the blanket you curl up in on the coldest nights, your fingers tracing the patchwork quilt that depicts all the times you beat the odds and survived. Happiness is in the smiles you tease out of others and the ones teased out of you; the laughter that spills out between someone else’s lips and yours; the floral fumes of intimacy lingering in the air for hours afterwards and the way that you hold the sweetness of it between your teeth, unwilling to let it go. Happiness is a bittersweet pill; it can never be taken when you are most desperate for it but rather only when the longing subsides and you accept the darkness from which you will someday be free. When you treat your life as though it is a map yet to be unfolded, you can forgive the madness, heartbreak and failure that forms each crease. You forgive them because when you unfold your map, it is the creases that define the valleys in between.
