45. Writing a decade or so after the fact, Motolinia noted that traces of the pestilence were still visible on the faces of the people, which were "full of holes." The disease was called "the great leprosy" in the native language (Motolinia was fluent in Nahuatl, the indigenous tongue of central Mexico) because the victims were covered from head to toe with pockmarks. Then, in 1531, eleven years after the smallpox epidemic, Mexico was struck by an outbreak of sarampión, the traditional Spanish word for measles. The native peoples called this the year of the "little leprosy"; the damage was severe, though not as catastrophic as the smallpox pandemic.
