Now Playing @ Mott St. Chicago
Amid the tannic crackle of afro-latin grooves and the dialectic crunk of transcontinental hip hop is nestled a little jewel of a thing on Mott St.’s dinner soundtrack. “Les ‘Lá-bas’” (fr: the “down there”) is the opening piece from Henri Texier’s 1977 record Varech (fr: wrack, wreck). ‘70s French jazz as it were.
Texier is an accomplished Parisian bassist who gained favor with top-tier American jazz artists as they passed through France on tour in the 1960s. All the while, Texier quietly composed and recorded his own work to primarily French audiences. Seemingly intentionally, he remained little known off of the European continent.
“Les ‘Lá-bas’” is a stark piece of percussive European jazz—double bass, guitar and violin are encircled by warm croaks of acoustic drums and bells. Texier also sings a wordless melody that evokes musical traditions centuries its senior.
It’s not our wont to upstage Chef Kim’s cuisine or Nate Chung’s inventively playful cocktails. We actually find this to be a delightful three-minute pause in which to enjoy all three harmoniously. - j.m. darling
