The Voting Rights Act was signed August 6, 1965. The first photo shows that. This moment was a key point in the war against White supremacy in America. This was a moment that was centuries delayed. The second and third are Charles McLaurin, a SNCC worker who helped start the voter registration work in Sunflower County, Mississippi. He worked with Medgar Evers, who kind of brought him into the Movement. Medgar Evers was a World War II veteran who was mentored by Dr. TRM Howard (Doctor, businessman, civil rights activist, and many other things; basically the mayor of Mound Bayou) in Mound Bayou, an all-Black town in the Delta. Howard, Evers, Amzie Moore (Cleveland), and Aaron Henry (Clarksdale) were key founders of the Regional Council for Negro Leadership in 1951. Medgar then went on to work for the NAACP as a field secretary in Mississippi. Medgar Evers was assassinated by a Klansmen (who didn’t go to prison until 1994) in 1963 for working in Mississippi for voting rights. Fannie Lou Hamer was from Ruleville, a place that Charles McLaurin (Mac) went to initially. He took her to register to vote, among other Ruleville citizens. She started her grassroots work in 1962 and never stopped working for civil rights including voting rights in her lifetime, even after nearly dying at the hands of White supremacy. She became a key leader and addressed the Democratic National Convention in 1964 (although the attempt was unsuccessful it was a major shifting point) to be recognized as delegates with the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (Aaron Henry was a founder). This is one of thousands of stories of efforts that led to the Voting Rights Act. These are the stories of local people, working together, who decided to make life different and better and resisted White supremacy in all forms against all odds. Hearing stories of the risks involved to secure the right to vote make me know that voting is important and I will always exercise the right to vote. If you’re not hip, please learn the history. It will grow you in a wonderful way. #votingrightsact #jaaamaccordingly #charlesmclaurin #moundbayou #medgarevers #drtrmhoward #fannielouhamer #amziemoore #aaronhenry #sncc #rcnl
