“Seascape” Saturday
A bit of a stretch… but, there are tiny microcosms of life far from the sea. And I’ll have to satisfy my waterlust with them for now. Lovely weekend in southern Pennsylvania on Mount Davis.
And no, I haven’t run out of sea pictures 🙂 Just felt like changing things up this week in the spirit of Fall.
Quiet corners
Teem with life
Just off the trail
Nearly out of sight
But to…

Monday Blues
Def: a Monday that is depressing or trying especially because of the return to work and routine after a weekend
So back I am to the hazy days, back to where you stand on the left and walk right as opposed to the opposite, back to where the subway is called MRT and not MTR.
It was supposed to be a good trip but somehow I've left dissatisfied, like a bitter taste in the mouth. I left and returned grumpy and in a foul mood, something that rarely ever happens on a leisure trip for me. And I can't quite explain it. Maybe it's just the Monday blues…
The long weekend was a packed one, which I somehow pulled together last minute and ideal for the fact I was escaping the increasingly serious haze settling into Singapore skies. Friday I met with a bunch of client/friends to maximize on the work day, met with an old and good friend at HKU to talk about our usual passions of philanthropy and rant about systemic social issues, then took my legs out for a solo run to the peak. Dinner plans materialized when a close friend from the WSJ invited me to Sichuan dinner with a few others. Too bad I no longer work at JPM so no more princeling news to try and squeeze out of me. Legal never talks anyways :P Since Le Moment was packed, dessert was a fail so off we went to do "old people" activities by getting a foot massage at Gao's followed by a nightcap at the good ole FCC. Have to say, I've always enjoyed getting drinks at FCC with friends as it's always a low-key venue right in the middle of the action in a central location and yet tucked away from the noise and debauchery of LKF. Plus the drinks are ridiculously cheap!
Slept in a bit on Saturday since I still felt a bit wrecked from the lack of sleep on the red eye but was still determined to take advantage of the hills while I was in town. The MTR stops west of Sheung Wan was novel to me, so I felt rather excited to be able to more easily get to the hiking routes on the Pokfulam end. With a sense of adventure, the explorations led to the top of Mount Davis, where you could see remains of a battery from WWII. Glad I wasn't there alone in the dark as many of the run-down structures would make for a good haunted movie setting!
Since I had missed breakfast and the day was hot, I was starving by the time we got to High Street for brunch. Wing and I both gorged on four egg omelettes before deciding that we wanted to walk it off by taking it easy along Bowen. I'll have to say, it's always great to spend quality time catching up with friends, but also to be able to do it actively, other than just sitting over coffee. Something that's much easier to do in HK since the weather gets cooler compared to Singapore. Unfortunately the road wasn't neverending and I had to rush off to meet others to work on a personal project. All very hush hush I know, but that's what makes it fun!
I've always been someone who likes to keep busy, but this time, with nagging thoughts on my mind on how I had expected this trip to go, I threw myself double time, perhaps even triple time into an extensive list of back-to-back activities to avoid any madness and keep myself sane. It's exhausting, but it was the only way I knew how to in a way "vent". At least I was productive!
So I continued to indulge with a Saturday Blackrock "client" dinner followed by dessert and a foot massage, all in the CWB vicinity. I had a desperate craving for LAB ice-cream in Tai Hang, but alas, this time it was not to be. For the second night in a row, I snoozed like a baby during my foot massage and I really hate when that happens, because then I wake up feeling as if I'd never had the foot massage…
Sunday funday started with a fantastic hike along Dragon's back ridge with MC, my usual enthusiastic hiking partner whenever I head back to the 852. I was so so envious though when all she talked about was how tremendous her trip to Chamonix was. Although she didn't do the race (we both tried for the OCC lottery but missed out this year), she still travelled to France with several others from Hong Kong and hiked the mountains everyday while living in a chalet. Hopefully, I'll get a place in the OCC next year, since I now have a coefficient of 2 for the lottery and the year after I'll aim for the CCC!
The rest of the day went by in a whirlwind of dim sum with some trailrunner buddies, random shopping, more work and finally dinner with the soon to be bride KC and groom DB. They are one helluva couple for whom I have the utmost respect for because no challenges or complications in their relationship have once prevented them from getting to where they are today. We tried an interesting new restaurant on Ship Street "Atelier Vivanda", helmed by chef Akrame Benallal and cashing in on the recently popular high-end bistro concept. The food and atmosphere was good but not particularly memorable so not sure if I'll go there anytime soon again. Too bad the place we wanted to initially try "Fishteria" was closed on Sundays.
Soon enough, I'm back full circle, standing in line for a red eye back to Singapore. I remember wondering whether the weekend actually took place because it felt so surreal, or perhaps it was because I just never accepted what it turned out to be. In any case, I'm glad I did find some relief from the haze and I never can really complain about a quick little jaunt to a city that's close to my heart. Let's just hope this Monday and cantankerous phase blows over soon!
