If Spinoza had been mindful while doing his work, the work Ethics would not have been written.
If Spinoza had treated lens-grinding as a sacred practice to be inhabited fully, The Ethics would not exist. Not because he would have been “less spiritual,” but because his finite cognitive surplus would have been absorbed by maintenance. Lens-grinding paid the rent. It did not generate Spinoza.
What produced The Ethics was precisely the refusal to let survival labor claim total attentional sovereignty. He did the work instrumentally, sparsely, almost grudgingly and guarded the remainder of his cognitive energy for something that expanded the intelligibility of existence itself.
This is where religions and states converge, despite their different costumes. They promote mindfulness not because it liberates, but because it stabilizes throughput. A mindful subject does not ask whether the task deserves their best attention. They do not experience the theft of time as theft. They metabolize necessity as virtue. From any system’s point of view, that’s ideal. A population that treats maintenance as sacred, confuses obedience with presence and anesthetizes critique through attention control is cheaper to run.
Spinoza was dangerous precisely because he did not sanctify necessity. He accepted causal determination without ritualizing it. He did not say “this task is meaningful”; he said “this task exists, and I will not let it colonize my understanding.”
Mindfulness doctrines invert the hierarchy. They tell you that how you pay the tax matters more than what the tax costs you in time, energy, and possibility. This is false. Attention is finite. Giving it to what does not expand power is not virtue. It is depletion dressed up as wisdom.
This is exactly why religions and states like it. A mindful worker is a quiet worker. A mindful subject is a non-resistant subject. A mindful cleaner does not ask what they could have thought instead. Nothing threatens power more than a mind that refuses to confuse maintenance and coercion with truth.
