Q&A with Mountain Machine
Nick Lambert, the head honcho of Mountain Machine Studios, fielded a bunch of questions about Mountain Machine's promising beginnings and their latest endeavors. In short, Mountain Machine creates gorgeously rendered epic games.
What is Mountain Machine and where do you find your inspiration to do what you do?
Mountain Machine is a game development company that strives to create epic, emotional stories in beautifully created worlds. Our inspiration comes from the books, movies, and video games we grew up with. Taking what spoke to us in those and creating something that we're excited to be a part of, explore, and let others experience.
Who is Mountain Machine? Is it true that you guys are a super-team made of family and friends?
It is true! We are two brothers, two cousins, and two great friends. We've managed to create quite the little "machine" with our own individual talents and skills, along with being a company that runs incredibly smooth.
[Josh, Nick, and Brian huddled around a computer:]
How will being in Oregon and the Oregon Story Board Accelerator Program help Mountain Machine Games?
Well, its truly changed everything for us. We went from only two of us working "sort-of" full-time for free, to all of us being able to be paid and work, as well as hire an intern as an employee. We were also able to accomplish the amount of work in the first three weeks of the program that had taken us a year to accomplish prior.
What have you learned from the other companies in the space?
A lot. Mostly, how to run a business and how to grow. Its been like going back to school.
What are your goals during the Oregon Story Board Accelerator Program?
We will have two projects released by the end, and will have made incredible headway on a new game.
What distinguishes Mountain Machine from the competition?
We focus on making epic worlds that you want to learn about and be a part of. We use art, sound, and design to bring you in, and give you a story that you want to spend time with and explore.
What do you see as one of your biggest challenges and how do you plan to overcome it?
Our biggest challenge is: how to we keep the momentum going that OSB has given us? However, we are learning everyday how to do this and we feel like we are being put on a very positive path.
We would love it if you could share news about Glitch Labs!
This is a fun little app we made that allows the user to glitch photos they have on their phone. Sadly, its not working too well at the moment on iOS8, but we plan on getting a fix for it soon.
What’s next? Give us the inside scoop about Mountain Machine’s next project.
All I can say is that we have a game that involves an epic female explorer that hasn't been heard from in a while and her husband is on a dangerous adventure to find out what happened to her.
Bonus question: As avid gamers, you must have a game you love. Which games should we know about?
Right now, we are playing an embarrassing amount of Destiny. Sadly, the story in it is not up to par, but the gameplay and multiplayer element is executed perfectly. As for story games, we really liked the Mass Effect trilogy and The Last of Us.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Nothing really, other than a huge thank you to OSB and all the mentors for all the guidance and advice that they've given us so far.
